A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine asked me to help her make a skirt for her upcoming missions trip to Zambia. I of course was all for it, but had no idea it would be such a big hit. She wanted to make a maxi skirt. I had never made one before, but knew there were tons of tutorials out there on pinterest. After reading a bunch I settle on this one:

After the first sucessful round I posted a photo of my skirt on Instagram and imediately had more friends asking me to help them. So here I am four skirts later telling you. This is a GREAT tutorial, use it. The only things I would change are ……the waist measurment, she says to take your waist measurement, divide it by two and add one. I did this on all the skirts and it ended up too big, so we trimmed it down. I would actually say to do waist measurement divided by two and thats it. The fabric is stretchy, so it will stay up no matter what, it just varys on how snug it feels. I would also say that it does not take 30 min. When I made mine it probably took me 45. And helping the beginning sewers it took more like an hour and a half. Still a quick project, just a heads up if you are planning it out.
(don’t mind the mess behind me….or the poor quality – I am not skilled at taking my own photos)
As far as sewing projects go I really recomend this. I have helped two of my coworkers (who have never really sewed) make them. And by help them I mean I tell them what to do and they do it. I did none of the sewing on their skirts. And them love them so much more because they made it themselves. It is so much fun seeing them excited and proud of accomplishing something that I tend to take for granted.
Have you made a maxi skirt before?
