Brief Snapshot Of Company History

Coley Arnold and Lindsey Holt first met at a Scottsdale Bible Church class for young, married couples. Arnold had recently given birth to her first child, Baylor and Holt was pregnant with her first.

“At first, we bonded over becoming new moms,” said Holt.

“Yes, that was the first connection, but it grew from there as we realized we had similar passions,” added Arnold.

In July 2011, the Holts and Arnolds took a trip together to Banff in Alberta, Canada. On that trip, they began discussing their frustration over a lack of places to shop for vintage items in the Phoenix area. They joked about starting their own event so they could shop themselves. Their husbands didn’t laugh. They immediately saw a good business idea and encouraged their wives to pursue it.

“Our first market was in our friend’s backyard in September, 2011,” said Holt.

“We had 23 vendors –and our own booth full of chippy and rusty finds we’d been keeping in our garages,” added Arnold.

“We were shocked when 600 people showed up! There was a line to get in and no one could find parking,” said Holt. “We knew then that something special had started.”

The friends then moved the market to West World of Scottsdale, where it has been since. Each year, the event grows tremendously and the business continues to expand to accommodate the crowds. In 2015, they welcomed 35,000 shoppers to their events.

“First, we went from one day to two,” explained Arnold. “In 2016, we’re adding a third day. We are hosting a special shopping experience on Friday night. That will give our shoppers first dibs on all of the great things our vendors have been curating just for our market.”

“We’re also adding several new vendors, bringing our total to 200,” said Holt. “We will add a section outside the main building for additional shopping. We’re also adding a third market in 2016 in California.”

Lindsey was born with “junkin” in her blood. Raised in Spokane, Washington, she fondly remembers going to junk, estate and yard sales with her parents and siblings.

“To this day, my parent’s house is filled with antiques and all sorts of treasures that remind me of my youth,” said Holt. “In high school, I used to search for the funkiest t-shirts I could find in thrift stores. I’ve been finding the beauty in other people’s ‘junk’ my whole life. Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market is simply a product of my own love of junk!”

Lindsey graduated from The Master’s College in Santa Clarita, California – where she had a volleyball scholarship. She met her husband, Kevin, there. The couple briefly lived in South Carolina while Kevin played minor league baseball before moving to Arizona in 2007.

“I am blessed to have a family filled with craziness around the clock,” said Holt. “Between my husband and my three kids, it never stops. At the end of the day, I wouldn’t trade them for anything. Well, maybe I’d consider it if it was a vintage industrial card catalogue.”

An Arizona native, Coley Arnold doesn’t see junking as a job – it’s her passion.

“I started treasure hunting at a young age going to garage sales every weekend with my family,” said Arnold. “I love seeing someone’s junk transform to something beautiful.”

Arnold attended Arizona State University where she met her husband, Justin. Prior to owning Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market, she had a successful career as a dance instructor. Now, she choreographs a mix of vintage and modern in people’s homes through styling and design.

“I love design and using vintage pieces to bring warmth and tell a story in someone’s home,” said Arnold. “Finding the perfect piece is a true treasure hunt for me. Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market was born from a love of junk and a desire to have a supportive and encouraging community in the greater Phoenix area.”
