Melted Crayon Art

My sister Molly came to visit over Christmas. With the new baby we spent a lot of time at home, so we got busy crafting! Molly saw melted crayon art on Pinterest and wanted to attempt some of her own. We ended up with splattered walls and blown fuses, but they turned out great!

1. Print a silhouette, cut it out, and trace it.

2. Color it in with a Sharpie.
3. Cover the picture with tape, going straight down from the umbrella.

4. Take papers off of several shades of blue and grey crayons. Put them into a large glue gun to melt just as you would with a glue stick. She used about 25 crayons per picture.
Here she is with her masterpieces.

Here is a close up. The picture really doesn't do it justice. The texture makes it look really cool from all angles. Great job Molly, love them!

Industrial Style Light

I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas with your families celebrating the birth of our Savior.  I'm sure everyone got some very fun gifts.  Today I wanted to share a very fun gift that my husband and I received for Christmas.  An amazing industrial style light!!!  I know it may not sound very exciting, but my dad took an idea of something I had seen and crafted this amazing light for us, for our dining room!

Have any of you seen the show “Picker Sisters”?  I loved that show!  But anyways, they had made a light out of an old rusty irrigation pipe they had found.  So I had showed my dad the show where they made the light and he thought he could find something to recreate it for us.  And he got busy.

And the other wonderful part of the gift, was my dad was here to help us put it up!
Here's the finished product!  What do you think?  Doesn't it look great!  If you are interested in buying a light please email me!

Felt Flowers

We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends!

Here are some felt flowers I made recently. I attached most of them to clips so they can easily go on hats, jackets, headbands. I followed the tutorial over at Crafter's Anonymous Club. The only things I did differently were cutting out a “blob” shape (below) rather than a circle to create more of a petal effect and glueing beans in the centers of the flowers.

Pinterest Project

***Hey all it's Mandy again, just stoppin over for a quick little Thursday project***
So we all know Pinterst is the bomb right? I don't  really need to expound on that. Since I am currently in process of moving into an apartment I can already see many many projects from Pinterst in my near future. Today I am here to share the first one with you.
I have always known that when it comes to a kitchen table that I didn't want your standard fare. It used to be that I wanted all mismatched chairs to add more character, then I wanted all different colored chairs….and just like that my mind was constantly changing. Until I found these two pins:

r: both; text-align: center;”>After seeing those babies I finally decided on painting the chairs turquoise. Nothing too fancy like the dipped legs of the one photo and nothing quite as bold as the hot pink chair, but they make a statement none the less. And the best part was other than finding the time to actually do the painting, is it was SO simple.

1. First is the chairs that I started with: a great find by Lindsey who stored them for me till I moved.
2. Next you get a beautiful action shot, just in case you didn't know what spray painting was.
3. The tools: I decided to do a coat of primer first, since I was using a lighter color paint I wanted to make sure it went on even, and lasts longer.
4. The finished project….or half of it since there are four chairs really.
I love the way the turned out, they will add a great pop of color to my home, now I just need to get a table to use them at.

Another Frame Wall

Well I first want to apologize for my delay at getting this up for you today, things have been a little crazy around here with Christmas approaching so quickly.  Have you guys been enjoying the holiday?  Today I took my kiddos to get their picture taken with Santa!  What a crazy mess.  These things never quite go the way we imagine them do they, they don't for me at least, never.  Gavin was completely terrified and didn't want to go near Santa, which then made Audra start screaming.  So in order to get them anywhere near Santa, mom had to get into the picture and they sat on my lap, while my 3 week old was the only one to sit on Santa's lap!  Lovely how that works.  Here's what we ended up with . . .
Pretty funny.  This was the best picture of the 3.  They look so happy don't they!?!
Anyways I hope you are all taking time to enjoy your families and some fun festivities this holiday season.  Today I have a fun project that we have been working on in my girls' bedroom, its not quite finished yet, but I'm loving our progress so far.
It's a frame wall.  I've been collecting frames for some time now and very slowly painting them (my husband was quite happy to have all this mess, finally being put to use).  Once I had them all painted I laid out 2 different possible arrangements for the frames.
Option #1
Option #2

arator” style=”clear: both; text-align: center;”>

We decided on Option #1.  So I didn't use any exact measurements to arrange the frames.  I did measure the distance from one side of the entire frame wall to the other to make sure it would be centered and then measured the distance from the frame on the far right side of the frame wall to the right side of the map and then started by putting up the map.  Do you remember this map from a while back?  It was one of my thrifty finds several months ago, and the colors are perfect for the girls room.  The map is very fragile and in 3 seperate pieces, so I used lots of teeny tiny nails to attach the map to the wall.
We then used some old barnwood molding to frame out the map.  Then based on the picture I proceeded to hang the rest of the frames, including the hairbow/headband frame.  And you will notice a small empty spot on the right side of the map that is to hang an “H”.  I haven't found one that I liked yet, so once I find one, it will fill that hole.  And then I still would like to fill a few of the frames.  So I the frame wall is still slightly unfinished, but I was so excited to have it all up on the wall I had to share.
What do you think?

The Stockings are hung…

Happy Friday!  This is a long one, but I promise it is worth it!
Here are some shots of our Christmas over here in the Arnold house.  I love this time of year and am so excited to celebrate with my little family!

I made these burlap stockings last year- I need to make one more for next year :)

This is a hand carved train from the 50s I found and I just love it as the center piece on our table!  Also a great place to show off our Christmas cards!I want to thank you all for praying for my friend.  He went to be with the Lord on Monday night.
My girlfriend and amazing photographer is doing a silent auction to raise funds for Kelly and her kids.  If you would like to help this sweet family check out her blogfor details.  Thanks for your help!I also wanted to share this article a friend posted on facebook.  It brought me to tears and although we will still do gifts in our house and we do have Santa gifts as well, I just love the idea of getting the kids involved in helping other children in another country.  I am getting the catalogues today so we can pick out our first gift.  Let me know if you want to join us in this great new tradition!

When Christmas Gets Radical: Whose Birthday Is It Really?

I t’s been over ten years of nothing under the Christmas tree here.
Strange, the way children teach men.::

It was dark, I do remember that. Bedtime. Smoothing back hair, kissing foreheads.
One round moon hanging large outside the window, an ornament dangling off stars, decorating the night.
I had gifts to wrap. So, pull up the blankets. Prayers. And then, when I’m at the door, one hand on the doorframe, resting in the light of the hallway, I turn to close the door a bit on the dark.
He stops me with just one question:
“What does Jesus get for His birthday?”

The words hung… strung me up.
I say the words into the black. Um… A cake? Our love?
I can hear him turn again in the bed, roll over on the pillow. Restless…
“But Mom…. if we get wrapped presents for our birthdays, real sacrifices from people who love us — they gave up other things to give something to us — then why don’t we do that for Jesus’ birthday?”
I stand at the door looking into all that light cast down the hallway.
Why is the sky blue, why do we blink, how do clouds hold all that water, the children ask me a thousand questions and the world spins dizzy on a million questions I don’t know the answers to.
I stand in the dark, the light right there, and I grope for the answer that could change the world…

“Why don’t we give up things so we can give to Jesus for His birthday?”

Is it always this way, that a little child will lead them?
He was four or five that year, I can’t remember. I just know that now he’s fifteen and I stepped out into the light and we’ve done all the Christmases since his way, giving away. It’s not at all wrong to do it differently, but just for us… all the Christmas gifts — gifts for the Christ Child.
I shamefully confess I thought it would somehow make me sad. I am a very slow learner.

How could I have thought that only love under the tree would do anything but make our happiness flourish?

The Birthday Child tells us what He wants: Give to the least of these and you give to Me.
So this is how we do it: We pick out gifts from His gift catalogues — Compassion Catalog, Samaritan’s Purse Catalog, Partner’s International Catalog, World Vision Catalog, Gospel for Asia Catalog, Mennonite Central Committee Catalog.

It happens after breakfast, each day for the last two weeks of Advent, selecting one gift for He who is Christmas.
They flip pages, deciding on what to give Him today:
“Anyone think we should get a pair of rabbits today?”
“I was thinking mosquito nets. Two. I wouldn’t want to die of malaria.”
“If we buy a seed packet for a family, our gift is tripled.”
“Did you read the story on page 25 about what a difference it makes for an orphan family to have seeds? The little gi

rl said, ‘Life is much better with food.’”
“Why are you crying, Mama?”
“Oh, just thinking—- how life really is much better with food…

::

I’m sitting at the table with the kids all bent over The King’s Catalogues when I finally get what the kids already know:
I’d rather only fill a child’s tummy than fill my house with anymore things.

Maybe that’s always the only choice we have to make every Christmas: feed our own fickle wishes or feed the real hunger of Christ?

Nothing can be claimed, taken, received, had; everything we have is gift to us from heaven. All that we have has no other source but the hand of God (Jn 3:27).

So “Christian hands never clasp and He doesn’t give us gifts for our gain because a gift can never stop being a gift— it is always meant to be given.”
God Himself. Filled.
When we give to Christ in the hungry, He satisfies our own hunger pangs.
A decade of this, our little family turning the Christmas tree upside down and letting gifts all fall into the hands of the poor.
Some thought it too strange, all this with no bows under the tree and I really understood but we couldn’t stop seeing just this, Him hanging on a tree. It’s just the way He’s just spoken to us, that’s all.
And then yesterday, my Dad, he stood in our kitchen.
Stood with his hand on the counter, his farm coveralls still on, him just driving by, and he said it quiet, “I think this year — we shouldn’t do gifts as a family.”
He looked up at me. My eyebrows arched.
He understood?
“I was thinking that this year — maybe we should just all go together — and see if we can help drill a well in Africa.”
And that one boy now fifteen, who asked a question that answered everything — he turns to me and he smiles.
His smile lighting the room and all the world.

Essential Online Reading:
How to be the Rich Family in Church — we read this at least 2-3 times a year, the children always reminding me to read it at the table, and I never, ever get through it without laughing through tears.. sometimes sobbing. What have I ever sacrificed? This one story, which is entirely true, has changed our family’s perspective on giving perhaps more than anything else. Simply a Must Read.
The Gospel Demands Radical Giving — David’s Platt one sermon…. leaves me undone. I deeply appreciate his point that we can’t compare each other’s giving, that Jesus’ life is our standard. Watching this might be the very best Christmas gift you ever gave yourself… and Jesus. Five star. That could make the Kingdom of God shine like stars in the universe…
