Buffet Redo

Remember my buffet that looked like this?

buffet after

Well, actually it originally looked like this

buffet before

Sorry for the horrible pictures.  I have come a long way with my picture taking.  Still have a long way to go, but I am getting better thank goodness!

My parents got this beautiful buffet as a wedding present 28 years ago!  My mom was rearranging her house and she decided she was ready to pass it on to me last year.  I wanted to give it a make over and painted it white that was supposed to be a base coat, but I was pregnant and never ended up finishing it.  Well, I got inspired the other day and decided to go in a totally new look.

I got the antique brass pulls on ebay and painted it in Annie Sloan’s Graphite Chalk Paint with a clear wax top coat.  I stained the top with Minwax, and I threw the can away and don’t remember the name of the color.

I love it and am so happy I took the time to finish something that I will never sell.  Something just for my house.   Yippee!

Projects and West Elm

I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day!  My kids and husband spoiled me and I even got to take a nap.  Oh the things that get us moms excited now right? If you came to the market, you may know the news, but if you missed it,

We have a fun announcement…

Lindsey and I are so excited to partner with West Elm.  Now time to get busy on projects so we have things to sell!

Here is a desk that I finished this weekend.  I don’t have before pictures, but I love how it turned out.

I got a new camera yesterday and I love the quality of the photos.  Its the Sony Nex 5; basically a point and shoot with changeable lenses.  I am excited to actually learn how to use this camera.  I had a Nikon D40 (that I lost) and I never learned how to use all the fancy functions.  I am promising myself I will actually take the time this time around to learn.  Wish me luck!

Apparently my husband was testing it out because when I went to edit my desk photos, I found this little gem in there.  I love this picture of my oldest, Baylor.

Stay tuned for more information on our day at West Elm.  We will be posting lots of teasers of what will be for sale.

A quick (and messy) Mother’s Day Project

Last year’s cute handmade Mother’s day gift was an epic fail. We made those adorable handprint butterflies, let them dry, and cut them out. Then I could.not.find.them. Seriously? Who loses the adorable gift they made for their mother and mother in law? Me, apparently. But never fear, this year we did not fail! This was an easy project that was quick, but fun and thoughtful, especially for a Grandma who is far away. We made hugs! I got this idea from Pinterest (of course) and it originated from a really cute blog called Tons of Fun.
The fun part! paint the little people’s hands and make some handprints.

Measure the size of your hug.

Punch holes and add ribbon or yarn.

On Being Neighborly on May day

002
I hate to admit it, but I am not very neighborly. I get home, pull into the garage and shut the door with a cursory wave at a neighbor (if I have to). But lately, the beautiful weather has been bringing people out into their front yards, and even an introvert like me can’t help but stop and talk. It does make me long a bit for “the good old days” when people used to shoot the breeze in their front yards for hours. Maybe a little nostalgia will make me a better neighbor…someday
There is one day, however, that the Busy Bees and their mama are the favorites in our neighborhood. On May Day, May 1st, the Busy Bees deliver flowers to the front doors of our closest neighbors, a tradition that these little girls simply love.

004
These cones are very simple – just paper rolled up into a cone and secured with double stick tape. last year we used scrapbook paper, but since the Baby Bee has recently become an epic colorer, I let them loose on some cardstock instead. A hole punch, a ribbon and some flowers from your garden (or the clearance section at Fry’s) and you are all set to become a great neighbor. Throw in some super cute delivery girls and you will be the best neighbor ever!

The Little Bee always loves delivering our May Day goodies, especially when there happens to be a sweet Grandpa doing the crossword puzzle on his front porch and ESPECIALLY when said adorable Grandpa has a cat. The girl is obsessed.

Are you a good neighbor? Does you neighborhood have traditions? I would love to hear about them!

Meet Ralph

Or as my kids like to call him “Bull Head”.  We have a new addition to our family.  Let me back up a bit…

I am part of this facebook auction site called Junk Girls Auctions.  You should join, its fun and a bit addicting!  Anyway, I was browsing the auctions and I spotted Ralph.  I didn’t know that was his name at the time, but more on that later.   One of our vendors was selling him and I immediately fell in love.

I have always wanted one of those cute animal heads from West Elm and Anthropologie, but I just couldn’t justify the $85 price tag.  I snagged this baby for $35 plus a sample can of paint makes for a cheap statement piece!  One of our other vendors Mary Rita named him Ralph and I thought it was a perfect fit!

Here he is now…

Ralph is now part of the family.  The kids love him!

Stamped Produce Bags – a belated Earth Day craft.

Very high on my list of things I hate are those bags that you put your produce in at the grocery store. By the way, my husband and I have an ongoing fight over whether or not to put bananas into one of those bags. Um, dude, bananas have peels. A year or so ago I went super Earth Mama and made some bags for produce out of an old pair of pants, but as many many many things in my home, they went missing. And so I returned to those icky bags.
But not for long! This week the busy bees and I did a little bit for the Earth and made ourselves some new produce bags, and made them even more awesome by using fruits and veggies to decorate them. It definitely was a fun (but slightly messy) project. I’m not gonna lie, fabric paint is not easy to get out of your favorite, perfectly worn in grey tee shirt. Boooo.
010
To make these bags, you will need
1. 1 – 2 yards of lightweight but sturdy fabric. I got mine at Joanns in the utility fabric section.
2. Fabric paint
3. Meat trays for the paint (yay recycling!)
4. Various fruit and veggies. We used apples, pears, oranges, broccoli, celery, cucumber and carrot.
For a little educational value, I labeled two pieces of fabric “fruit” and two “veggie” so we had a little conversation about sorting and categorizing, and even talked a little nutrition.
036
041
like the blue splatters? Heres a tip – put the lid on the paint BEFORE you shake it.
049
040
How awesome does that celery stamp look? That might have to make an appearance in a later project…
060
After drying overnight, I whipped up some drawstring bags (there are 400 bazillion tutorials online, so I will forgo the laborious instructions) that will be perfect for produce, and will spare me from those horrid grocery store bags! And my store gives me a $.05 discount for every bag I bring myself so cha ching! I figure these will pay for themselves in, like, a year or two. Ha ha.
010
What baby steps have you made to make the earth a little happier this month? It doesn’t take much! Every little bit helps.
Happy Earth, um, Month!

Fashion Friday

Top: Vince Jeans: Vince Necklace: J. Crew Shoes: Dolce Vita for Target Watch: Brass Plum Nordstrom Rings: Ariella Collection

Lately I’ve been on a crazy color kick to celebrate the spring season, which usually involves some sort of colored denim, bright jewelry, and candy colored flats. But, today I’ve decided to forego the brights and just keep it neutral. There’s something I love about being able to throw on a black pair of jeans and pair anything with them.

How about you guys? Do you prefer color or neutrals?

Happy Friday & have a great weekend!

4 words that will help you get ready for the market (when you have little people climbing up your legs)

Yes, that is a very long title. No, I am not an expert on what to do with your children while you are working on a big project. Yes, I very frequently pull my hair out trying to juggle my real job (taking care of my two sweet bumblebees) and my side job. But over the past few years I’ve found a few things that help a LOT when I am trying to get ready for a craft show or market while keeping those sweet little bumblebees fed, clothed and happy. They are pretty simple ideas, as I am a simple kind of gal. I hope some of my fancy schmancy words will help you if you find yourself trying to balance mama – ness and creativity.
161
Our snackies, all prepped and ready to go!

1. Preparation – the state of being prepared
This word can mean lots of different things to different people. The main way that I bring about the elusive “state of being prepared” is by prepping food in advance. I am BIG on freezer cooking, and I prepackage snacks so I can just grab and go. I just bought an awesome cookbook called Not Your Mother’s Make Ahead and Freeze Cookbook, and I love it. (The author, Jessica Fisher, is my absolute favorite mom blogger.) My girls are used to a half an hour or so of independent play while I am cooking dinner. If dinner is ready already, I have an extra half an hour to work on market stuff instead of working on dinner!
I’m also going to do massive amounts of laundry this weekend, and plan out two weeks worth of outfits for the girls, and maybe even myself. This may or may not help, since the Baby Bee’s love of mud makes her burn through outfits like fiendfire (yep, that was a Harry Potter reference. Nerd Alert) At least this way I can throw in a load or two instead of the usual half dozen. Really, anything you can do in advance will make your life easier while you are trying to finish a project.

2. Novelty – the state of being new or unique
First, raise your right hand and swear that you will never, ever tell my children what you are about to read.

We steal half or our children’s Christmas gifts the day after Christmas. They have never noticed.

I know that this tactic will not last long, that soon they will be hollering “MOOOOOOM! WHERE IS MY insert name of toy here!!!!!” on Dec 26th. But the last few years, it has been a blessing to be able to pull out one of those toys when I really need it. Like when the Little Bee is getting stitches removed, but that’s another story altogether. Things that are new, or novel, are fun! And they keep your little ones’ attention long enough to let you get some work done.
I am certainly not saying that you need to bust out a new toy for your kid whenever you feel like he might get bored, but if you can provide them with a novel activity you can buy yourself a few precious moments. In addition to pulling out random My Little Ponies and new puzzles, here are a few novel ideas that have helped keep the bumblebees busy while I work on a market project.
364
A big box! These little girlies and their imaginations turned this into a car, a train, and even the flyboat from the Baby Bee’s favorite tv show, WonderPets – also known as the only tv show she will watch for more that 6 minutes.
349
A couple little boxes. this is easy for me since I am an Amazon addict. They stacked them up, made baby beds, a house for a butterfly named Bud, all sorts of fun stuff! I threw in some fabric scraps and they were in heaven.
639
Playdough kits. We do playdough a lot, but when you throw in some other stuff, it takes on a whole new meaning. I’ve added feathers, beads, candles and cupcake holders, and little plastic animals to make playdough more exciting. PS, the plastic animals were one of the stolen Christmas gifts. Shhhhh…..
629
A roll of butcher paper. We do a lot of coloring too, but somehow being able to color all over something this big is super fun for these girls. You can even leave the paper on and pull out a new medium each day – crayons on Monday, markers on Tuesday, watercolors on Wednesday, etc. You can make quite a masterpiece!

3. Concentration – clustered or gathered together closely.
Okay, so that definition is weird, but fitting. Usually when you think of concentration, you think about using all of your brain power on something, but what I mean is more of the, um, orange juice sort of concentration. Don’t worry, here comes the explanation. I’ve noticed that if I can give my kiddos my “concentrated” attention for even a short period of time, they are more likely to play independently afterward. So I try give my kids my whole self, not thinking about what I need to do, just really focusing on them for a while before I have to do some work. Sometimes, I’ll admit, this tough for me when I am working on a big project. I am making mental lists, looking around, or my mind is just moving on to the next thing. But I’m their mama first and foremost. They deserve an undistracted Mama! And I know if I really throw myself into what those little people want to do, it’s much easier for them to let me go later. Or maybe they just get sick of me. I don’t know…

4. Reward – something given in return for service, merit, hardship, etc.
Well, this one’s easy to understand. Give your little ones a reward for all their understanding during the few weeks you have to work hard. I truly believe that it is good for little ones to see their Mama working on something she loves (second to them of course) but it is hard on them, especially when they are used to your undivided attention. The best reward is obviously your time! When the market is over, I plan on putting away my sewing machine for a while and building forts in the living room, taking long flower picking walks, eating popsicles on a blanket in the backyard, and just generally doing what those little Bees love to do. Hmmmm, that sounds like a reward for a tired Mama too!

See, nothing complicated, right? Like I said before, I’m no expert, but hopefully these ideas can help you. If you have any tips for keeping the kids clothed, fed and happy, please share them in the comments below. Lord knows, some days I can use all the help I can get!
