a new drawer

I kept seeing this photo of a painted file cabinet on pinterest. I LOVED it. But of course I don’t really have room in my studio for a full sized file cabinet, nor did I really have a use for it. So when I saw a little mini one drawer file cabinet at the thrift store for $4 I knew I had to have it. It was the perfect compromise, small enough that I could actually use it, and still get the same look. It was a typical black metal. So I started with a coat of primer and then used 3 coats of ballet slipper pink in gloss. Because well why would I not paint it pink?

At first I tried to take the hardware off the drawer, thinking that would make it nice and simple to paint the drawer. But of course it never goes that easy. It would not come off. So I resorted to painters tape. Which took a while to get it all covered, but in the end it worked just as well.

After it was all finished I added a few things to make it a nice little desk organizer. I used two old plant pots that I had sitting around to hold makers, pens, and pencils. Then I used three small prep dished to hold my business cards, washi tape and blank tags.

When all said and done I really like the way it looks. A pretty pink drawer that holds all of the odds and ends I use to package my Etsy products. Perfect!

Storage Room Wars

My husband and I decided to tackle the storage room this weekend.  It was a big junk pile and now I can actually find my paint and brushes!

Before (this is a little embarrassing!)

After…

I would love to slap some paint on the walls, but if we buy the house this has to be torn down anyway so hubby wouldn’t let me waste my time.  Smart man, but it would look so cute in a bright fun color right?

bathroom organization

I could easily spend hours drooling over pretty, clean and orderly bathroom photos on pinterest. But when it really gets down to it I am either too cheap and or too lazy to make one happen in real life. Because well, we use everything so much it is just nearly impossible to keep it all looking AWESOME at all times. I have done my best to meet half way with the attractive and also the functional. But consider yourself warned these photos won’t dazzle you.

On the counter I keep my body spray, current lotion, current nail polish, cotton balls and Q-Tips. What I deem to be some of the more attractive bathroom items I use daily. Both the cotton balls and Q-Tips are in small apothecary jars that I have picked up from thrift stores over time. If I ever found the right one I would like to put them all on a small colorful tray, just to give it a more finished look, and a little more color.

Then we get to the drawer. Now my bathroom just has ONE drawer, and a larger open cupboard. It was really difficult for me to figure out the best way to use it. I was used to having multiple small drawers or shelves. I didn’t like that with one drawer everything fell together and rolled all around. I am the type of person that likes everything to have a home, and that was just not working for me. So I ended up getting an organizer from Ikea that fit perfectly inside. I got it over a year ago, and it looks like they no longer have the same one, but these are similar.

As you can see there is a little compartment for everything that I use daily. Makeup, toothbrush/toothpaste, moisturizer, hair clips and so on. I started out with all my makeup in a cute bag that was in a basket with my hair products, and curling irons that I kept under the skink. Which totally worked, but when it came to the day to day I never put the basket back away, it always sat out on the counter, making it look messy and cluttered. So I sorted thorough all of my stuff and tried to separate out all the things that I use EVERYDAY, and I found a place for all of those items in the drawer with easy access, then the non essential maybe once a week items got put in the cupboard.

My suggestion for bathrooms is easier is always better. The easier it is to put things away the more likely you will actually do it.

Hello

Hello, my name is Coley and I have an organizing problem.  I have great vision of my house being labeled and organized and well, perfect.  I know that’s not totally possible in REAL life, but in my head it really does look fabulous!  When I organize, I can’t do a little at a time.  I have to literally take everything out of a room so I can then put it back together perfectly.  Does anyone else do that?  But then my kids wake up, or I need to change a diaper, or it’s lunch time… (I could go on all day).  So I am left with everything out in the middle of the hallway with two bins labeled and nothing put away.  It is then time to go to bed and I have to throw everything back into the room unorganized once again and hope to try again another day.   With all this to say, I have not finished the organization project I wanted to share with you so how about some more inspiration to motivate me to try again tomorrow?

Inspiration Saturday

If you are local to Phoenix, you need to come to our garage sale tomorrow!  We are cleaning out our market stuff and making room for more!

7:30 am

3701 N 34th st Phx, Az 85018

This is usually a day filled with beautiful pictures of perfect houses that we could only dream of… Well, today I decided to share with you some things I have gotten accomplished because of the inspiration on my very own blog!  In case you have been hiding under a rock, we have added some amazing chicks to our blogging team, and man are they inspiring!  Here is what I got done Friday…

The ever so talented Beth wrote a post this week about organized kids toys.  She said everything has to have a place, so I did that.  I bought a cheap toy holder from a garage sale for $10 and spray painted the buckets grey (total cost with the spray paint was $30).  This will be out in the family room so I didn’t want the rainbow blasting from the corner!

I

I was also inspired to organize my Christmas decor for the first year EVER!  Thanks to our guest blogger Danielle Wurth for her inspiration here

I also bought the receipt organizer that our Lovely Mandy suggested here!

Next on my list is to try those amazing fridge frames from Karie!  Did you guys see this post?  She is super talented and I am a bit jealous.  hehe!

Happy Organizing!

Collections of Masterpieces

We had a busy weekend over here at the Junk in the Trunk headquarters.  Well, we don’t really have headquarters, but it sounds so cool to say that doesn’t it!? Maybe someday… Anyway, Lindsey and I and our wonderful husbands built some fun stuff for the April show this weekend.  OK you caught me again, our husbands did the building and we did the painting, but we were totally working hard I swear!

I have been racking my brain since my son started preschool for a way to organize and display his artwork.  It seems like there is mountains of artwork that comes home everyday and some things are just too cute to throw away.  I purchased these cork squares from amazon, I am sure they are available at any craft store or Walmart.

I wanted to put them in a place the kids saw their special artwork everyday, but I really didn’t want it in the living room.  I want my house kid friendly, but not to look like the kids are taking over.  Anyone with me on this one?

So I decided to put these in the hallway.  It is up right outside their bedroom and we can all enjoy the art throughout the day.

How cute is that little lion?

I actually just ordered one more set of the cork boards so I can have that whole wall covered with their art as they walk down the hall.  I love it and the boys love seeing their art up there!

{Packing Up Holiday Decor} … Conquer it Quickly

We have a very special guest today!  Danielle Wurth is a professional Organizer and has joined us to kick start our Operation Organize Month!  She is the queen of organization and has some amazing tips for us!  Without further ado, here she is!

Danielle Wurth

By Dinner time on New Year’s Day every piece of Christmas Décor is completing packed away. It is a full day, but feels great to kick off the year wrapping up the past one. Celebrating the Holiday Season can be so bittersweet. On one hand we enjoy the festive music, family gatherings and celebrating the the glorious historical season. On the other hand there is tremendous work involved to pack up all the things that brought such great joy.  When your packing system is highly efficient, more time is spent embracing the season vs. complaining about the work involved.  Hope you feel refreshed, not exhausted after reading this!

{Packing Up Holiday Decor} … Conquer it Quickly

  1.  Remove Outdoor Lighting On a Separate Day – My hubby prefers to remove the lighting with the boys shortly after Christmas. They work together to remove the lights, check for dead fuses and pack them into our (1) huge red and green Rubbermaid décor bin.
  2.  Gather small décor in one place – I work on gathering and clean the Christmas plates, dish towels, coffee mugs etc. and place them all on ONE large surface such as the dining table.

Round Up the Troops for Packing Day- We celebrate as a family and pack up as a family. Select a window of time to remove the holiday décor but in a specific order according the organizing mama!

Set a Kitchen Timer – We set it for about 2-3 hours so the kiddos see it as a game and I stay focused.

Label and Properly Store Everything – We have 3 Mega Christmas Rubbermaid Bins: (1) for Outdoor Lights, (1) for Indoor Décor and  (1) for Tree Ornaments. You can even label the location of where the item was placed.

Pack and Purge Accordingly – ALL DECOR MUST FIT IN THE BINS (except your tree). If we acquire more the space allows then something must be passed along to another family. Period, no exceptions!

Pack Like with Like – Grab the box which stores a series of the same ornaments. Make it fun playing “I spy” for the kiddos to find and gently remove only that type of ornament to pack.

Label Your Items Packaging – From advent calendars to wreaths, every bag or bubble wrap is labeled using a Sharpie Marker and Avery label with clear packing tape placed over it for protection. It’s like a packing post-it note to keep you on track

Create a Packing Cheat Sheet – Packing things in a bin is quite a puzzle. Free hand drawing or use Avery labels to show the packing sequence.

Post the Packing Cheat Sheet – Slide the packing cheat sheet into a protective sleeve and adhere to lid of bin with packing tape for future reference. It is wurth the time and effort for everyone to reference.

Celebrate Your Success – Have a fire, eat smores, pour the hot cocoa for y’all deserve a BIG reward

Lost an antler along the way? - Didn’t make it past step one?  Just give me a jingle and me and my girls can help you get it done!

P.S. This season we seriously did lose one of our new car decor antlers.  It was really sad :0( My boys and I drove up and down Shea looking for it ..it now confirms we are so  NOT a typical family, more like a one antler type of family…classic story!

Fabulous Fashion Friday!

Hello Everyone! It’s Chantelle, the junkin’ intern, here for Fashion Friday! I’m so excited to be a part of Junk in the Trunk, and I can’t wait for the market that is already next weekend! (I’m sure you guys are feeling the same way!) Speaking of fa

shion…did you see Coley and Lindsey on Sonoran Living Live this morning?! They both looked so cute sporting their unique, vintage pieces. And what a great sneak peek at just some of the fabulous finds you’ll see at the market!

For this edition of Fashion Friday, I wanted to focus on timeless vintage clothing, jewelry, and accessories. I have always been inspired by old things that can be made new, and when it comes to clothing, it’s very easy to accessorize and re-imagine those classic pieces in your closet!

For example, check out this super fun polka dot skirt, paired with some sparkly heels and a trendy belt, gives this timeless piece a new look.

Here are some more great ideas for giving those cherished pieces some love.

Have a fabulous Friday everyone!

Souvenir Pillow

Sadly this project has been about three years in the making. Not that is was at all difficult, it probably took me 30 min to complete. So I guess pretty much it is something I had been planning to do but just never got

around to. I’m sure NONE of you guys ever do anything like that.

Many moons (aprox. 3 years) ago my dear friend Rachel went to New York. She brought back for me a cute NYC map handkerchief. Now seeing as I am not Kathleen Kelly I didn’t intend to use it as an actual handkerchief, but I knew I wanted to do something fun with it. I decided it would make a fun pillow, and it was the right color scheme to match my apartment. Perfect.

I used the measurements and basic steps from this post. But instead of having one piece of fabric I had three. I just cut two additional strips of fabric that would be the back. After hemming the edges I just sewed them up the sides, only really adding one additional step to the instructions I was following. I used a bright turquoise on the back to add a pop of color, and because that is what I had on hand. It would have also been fun with a colored print.

A simple way to not only update my couch, but also put to good use a great souvenir!
