Vintage Toy Party

This is a long post with a lot of pictures.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

I have been so excited to share this party with you!  On Friday we celebrated Baby Benson turning the big ONE with a Vintage Toy Party.  I had the best time planning this party.

Carissa from Mama’s Dogs came and set up her hot dog stand.  It was so cute and everyone loved the dogs!  My hubby and I also loved that we got to enjoy the party and not have to worry about grilling or cooking the whole time.

My favorite part of the party (besides the birthday boy of course) was the dessert table.  The cake and cupcakes hadn’t been set out yet.  I did manage to snap a quick pic of the cake, but the guests started arriving so I didn’t get one with the cupcakes.  Trust me though, they were cute!

Here is the AMAZING cake!  My girlfriend Kylie made it and it could not have turned out cuter!

The kiddos had a great time with the games.  Love these faces!

I had to sneak a picture of the cute birthday boy having his cake.  He loved it and cried when I took it away.

After the cup cakes, things got a little crazy… My girlfriend’s son Sawyer is just too cute.

Here is the favor table.  I forgot to snap a photo of it full of favors, but got this the next day.  The kids got Whoopee Cushions, Silly Putty and crayons in a cute metal tin.

Pinterest Tuesday: My Favorite Cleaning Tips from Pinterest, part 1

We’ve all seen it, the thousands of cleaning tips on Pinterest and either gotten extremely excited (yea! a homemade laundry soap) or you were ready to run for the hills (umm, homemade laundry soap, no thank you!). I do tend to fall on the side of the latter, but all of my attempts are not as promising as those pretty little pins. But what I do have for you today is a few of my tried and true favorite cleaning tips so far. These I have gone back to again and again because they really work, and tend to save you some money!

1. Essential Oil Air Freshner from: Ekwetzel

This really is so simple to do and it definitely beats any air freshener spray that you would buy in a store!

To do: Simply add a few drops of your favorite essential oil (I used lavender) to the inside of your toilet paper roll!

2. Diy reusable Fabric Softener Dryer Sheets from: Percy and Bloom

Another green cleaning tip! Love these since they are reusable and you don’t have to worry about clogging up the landfill with dryer sheets! Click link above for the “recipe”

3. Homemade Furniture Polish from: Frugal Living and Having Fun

No more spray, yea! For the recipe please click the link above.DSC_0157

4. DIY tub/shower cleaner from: Life Crafts and Whatever

This is one of those simple tips that I wish I could have found years ago!

Just mix in equal parts vinegar and dawn dish soap!DSC_0252 DSC_0253What have you found on Pinterest to help with your cleaning routine? I would love to hear it in the comments below!

Stamped Produce Bags – a belated Earth Day craft.

Very high on my list of things I hate are those bags that you put your produce in at the grocery store. By the way, my husband and I have an ongoing fight over whether or not to put bananas into one of those bags. Um, dude, bananas have peels. A year or so ago I went super Earth Mama and made some bags for produce out of an old pair of pants, but as many many many things in my home, they went missing. And so I returned to those icky bags.
But not for long! This week the busy bees and I did a little bit for the Earth and made ourselves some new produce bags, and made them even more awesome by using fruits and veggies to decorate them. It definitely was a fun (but slightly messy) project. I’m not gonna lie, fabric paint is not easy to get out of your favorite, perfectly worn in grey tee shirt. Boooo.
010
To make these bags, you will need
1. 1 – 2 yards of lightweight but sturdy fabric. I got mine at Joanns in the utility fabric section.
2. Fabric paint
3. Meat trays for the paint (yay recycling!)
4. Various fruit and veggies. We used apples, pears, oranges, broccoli, celery, cucumber and carrot.
For a little educational value, I labeled two pieces of fabric “fruit” and two “veggie” so we had a little conversation about sorting and categorizing, and even talked a little nutrition.
036
041
like the blue splatters? Heres a tip – put the lid on the paint BEFORE you shake it.
049
040
How awesome does that celery stamp look? That might have to make an appearance in a later project…
060
After drying overnight, I whipped up some drawstring bags (there are 400 bazillion tutorials online, so I will forgo the laborious instructions) that will be perfect for produce, and will spare me from those horrid grocery store bags! And my store gives me a $.05 discount for every bag I bring myself so cha ching! I figure these will pay for themselves in, like, a year or two. Ha ha.
010
What baby steps have you made to make the earth a little happier this month? It doesn’t take much! Every little bit helps.
Happy Earth, um, Month!

An Easter Dinner Table

071
Let me just say, you really lucked out today…you get three posts in one! I was going to title this Three Posts in One – Easy Cloth Napkins, Easter Eggs, Vintage China and my Children’s Shenanigans with the Garden Hose, but, um that was too long. So without further ado, here are three posts (+my childrens’ shenanigans with the garden hose) in one.
First of all – easy cloth napkins. These are…well…easy! I used a thrifted vintage pillowcase, which made four napkins. They turned out just a tad smaller than a regular napkins, so for Easter dinner, I will be giving these to the delicate ladies in my family, such as the lovely Auntie, and Cousin Anna Margaret. Uncle Bob and (ahem) my dad will be getting a roll of paper towels. Just kidding. That’s only when we are eating ribs. And ham. And burgers. And macaroni and cheese. But I digress.
It has been so beautiful here, so I decided to set my little workstation up outside. This was convenient, because it was close to the large patch of dirt in my back yard which can be easily turned into mud. Nothing entertains my beautiful little girls quite as well or as long as a good patch ‘o mud. More on that later. I used my rotary cutter to cut the hem off the pillowcase, then folded it in half, finger pressed it in the middle (this is the technical term for “push really hard with your finger to make a mark where you want to cut”) and then cut it in half.
011
013

Then I trimmed all the edges to make 4 rectangles. Really easy! Hem up the edges and you’re done. I used a 1/4 inch narrow hem. To get a narrow hem, use your seam gauge to measure a 1/2 inch hem, press/iron, then go back and fold the raw edge to the fold, and press again. Stitch as close to the folded or inner edge as you can. If you want that nice mitered corner, fold the point down into a triangle before making the final press.

016
018
052
These are so darn easy! Last time I made cloth napkins it was NOT a good experience, but these were so simple. Who is getting cloth napkins for Christmas? EV.RY.ONE.
Now on to Easter eggs! If you have read any of my kid posts, you know that I like to keep art projects fairly open ended – translate that Mommy doesn’t like to do all the work while the kiddos watch – and I felt like the Bees are still too little for “traditional” egg dying. I figured out a system that worked beautifully for us this year. We blew the eggs out of the shell, then put a chopstick through the holes and stuck the chopstick into a shoebox to paint. I could not believe how much time the Baby Bee spent painting these! She was concentrating so hard, her lil’ tongue was sticking out!
040

051
077
090
I was pleasantly surprised at how cute these turned out!
And last but not least, the vintage goodies! I host Easter at my house most years, and it’s so beautiful out this time of year that I usually set everything up outside. This year, I even talked my mom into loaning me her Grandmother’s china to serve dinner on!
Um, did anyone see that episode of friends where Chandler smashed all of Monica’s wedding china after he spent the whole day convincing her that it was okay to take it out of the box? Yeah, that was playing in my head all day long.
Anyway, I set it all up yesterday to see how it looked, and I took a few shots to show off how pretty it all looked together. I used the Resurrection Garden as a centerpiece, and the eggs the girls painted on the place settings, and I love how it all turned out! Of course, on Easter afternoon, it will be jammed with food, but I can still enjoy how pretty it all looks now.

My mom let me use her silver flatware too. When I opened the box, I got a sweet sentimental surprise – the little Christmas tag my Grandpa wrote to his parents was still in it. I feel so lucky to have this in my family!
155

All right, since I know you want it, here are the previously mentioned shenanigans. Since my kiddos got pretty dirty playing in the mud while I worked on the napkins, I let them turn the hose on – on each other apparently. Here is what happens when you spray a hose through a flyswatter at your little sister…

But then Mama gets these sweet snuggles…

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter, spending time celebrating the ultimate sacrifice the Christ made for us!

Paper Flowers!

paperflowers
Well over here at Junk in the Trunk we have been very busy preparing for the Vintage Market! It’s coming up really soon! April 27th, have you market your calendars! One of the things I have been working on is making lots of paper flowers! Now there are lots of different types and ways of making paper flowers, but today I’m just going to show you one.
picmonkey_image(18)
A book, string (I am hanging my flowers on a string, you will have to come to the market to see what we are doing with them, but you don’t have to hang them on a string), hot glue, paint (optional if you want to add a little color to the flowers) and that’s it. 1. Carefully tear the pages out of the book. 2. Fold one page in half (in elementary school our teachers used to call it hot dog style, long and narrow, as opposed to hamburger style). 3. Cut strips starting at the open end cutting 3/4 of the way toward the fol. Make sure to not cut through the fold.
picmonkey_image(19)
4. Starting on one end of the fold put a small dot of hot glue. (If you are putting your flowers on a string, lay the string through the hot glue.)  5. Start rolling the paper along the fold. 6. As you are approaching the end of the paper put a line of hot glue along the fold. 7. Continue rolling your paper to the end.
picmonkey_image(20)
8. Now for a little fluffing. Grab a pencil and starting at the ends of the paper strips roll the strips around the pencil, until you can’t roll anymore. Hold the rolled paper strips around the pencil for 10 seconds, this help them to hold a little curl. Once you remove the pencil, with your fingers gently seperate the layers of paper stips. Fluffing!

What have you guys been working on? Anything fun!?!

DIY Chicken Wire Ikea Frame {Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market}

No you are not seeing double, and yes this is the same frame from Ikea that I used for my girls gallery wall! What happened you might ask? Well, silly old me really didn’t hand that fun Ikea frame to well on the wall.  The moment came when a door was slammed a bit to hard and down came the frame, glass shattering and all. Throw it away, no! Have glass recut, expensive. Cheap option: get some chicken wire from my good old dad! I told you I was not too happy with the way the gallery wall turned out, so it was a great excuse to redo a few things!

A Resurrection Garden

Can you believe that Easter is almost here? I feel like this time of year always creeps slowly up on me, and suddenly it’s here! We here at the Beehive are loving the warm weather and are spending as much time as we can outside these days. And I love being able to serve Easter dinner outside…much easier to clean up! Since Easter is definitely close, I have started a few Easter projects with the Busy Bees, and I’m excited to share one with you.
Remembering the reason we celebrate Easter is a priority in our family and as the Little Bee grows, I think it’s important to take every opportunity to emphasize that Easter is about so much more than candy and bunnies, even though those things are fun! I saw a beautiful “Resurrection Garden” a few years ago on a blog and thought this would be a fun project for my girls and a good way to keep the empty tomb at the front of our minds.
002
To make a Resurrection Garden, you need:
- a shallow saucer. I used some terra cotta ones that were hanging around in the shed but you could use a baking dish too
- potting soil
- an empty container for the tomb. The original I saw used a small terra cotta pot, but I went super classy on this one and used an empty eye makeup remover containter.
- A rock for the front of the tomb
- Wheatberries or grass seed. I used wheatberries that I bought at Sprouts with great intentions of grinding my own wheat. Um, that never happened.
- Some sticks and twine to make the crosses.
The oranges are optional. And my weird kid likes them cut in circles instead of wedges. Go figure.

A quick note – the wheatberries will sprout faster if you soak them overnight.
First, spread a layer of soil in the saucer.
007
016017
Next, wedge the container that you are using for the tomb into the soil and cover it, too. We made one Resurrection garden and the other two I’m going to use for another decoration.
018
029
Make the crosses by tying twine around the sticks and stick them in.

033
Spread the wheatberries in a single layer and cover them with a light layer of soil. Drink some coffee. Has anyone else noticed that there are always food items in my pictures?
035040
046
Keep them moist and in a warm place, but not direct sunlight. And preferrably away from a curious dog. The best way to keep them moist is to mist them with a spray bottle, because the top layer is so shallow. Just let me warn you though, if you give spray bottles to both children, this is likely to happen…
003
instead of this…

019

I also submerged the bottom of the saucer in water in a glass baking dish for 20 minutes a day to keep the rest of the soil moist. In just a few days, we saw some growth! See the teeny tiny speck of green?
016
As of this morning, our Resurrection Garden looks like this! Check back in two weeks to see my Easter dinner table and how I use this little project as a centerpiece!

DIY Kids Bubble Wall Art

More colors of spring heading your way! We had a large empty wall in our living room which I had no idea what to do with. Buying large pieces of art were’nt really in the budget for the moment, so for the moment I thought I would have our girls create some masterpieces! It turned out really cute and they are really proud that it is hung for all to see in our big room!

DIY Kids Bubble Wall Art Materials:

Watercolor paper (Michaels)

Food Coloring (yes I am crazy, but yes it did come out of the clothes!)

Bubble solution (any old kid bubble solution works just fine)

Good old fashioned bubble wands!

a drop cloth of some sort to prevent a mess (alough good art never seems to stay on the canvas)

Ikea frames

Valentine's Day Reflections

Happy Valentine’s Day!!IMG_2958Do you guys have festive decorations up around your house? Here is a little glimpse of some of mine. Now enough buy cialis online with Valentine’s Day and on to the Old School. Ever since I moved into my apartment [read one year ago] I have wanted to put something on the empty wall in my dining room. But not having a real idea of what to put there gave me decorating paralysis – and thus it sat empty. Looking rather sad don’t you think?

IMG_2826A few weeks ago I found a great mirror at Savers, only problem was it was not in great shape. Besides being seriously dirty it had some pretty gnarly sticker residue on it. But the shape of the frame, and price was too good to pass by. So home with me it came.

IMG_2722Now had I been cool enough to own Goo Be Gone I would have used that to get the sticker gunk off, but I didn’t, and I of course didn’t want to run to the store to get just that. So I resorted to the next best thing. Nail Polish remover, it cleans up anything off of a mirror, including stray paint. After a bit of scrubbing she was nice and clean. So I took it all apart and gave the frame a nice coat of grey spray paint.

IMG_2742

After it dried, I put it all back together and my dad hung it on the wall for me, I came to the simple conclusion that it is fantastic! I am so happy with the way it turned out. It was worth the year long wait, because it fits perfectly with the rest of my apartment, and I can’t imagine having something else hanging there.

How She Decorates With Vintage Furniture

In light of our awesome theme this month, Kickin’ It Old School, we are going to share with you our obsession (yeah…its an obsession) with vintage furniture! And, because we have some crafty junkers on our team, a lot of this is also repurposed and up-cycled furniture. Enjoy!

Mandy

mail-2

“I have a few vintage pieces of furniture and I LOVE them all, but if I had to pick my favorites these would be them. The  massive armoire, that oh so decoratively hides my TV, has moved with me four times. And let me tell you it is QUITE heavy, but so worth the trouble, it really pulls the room together. And the best part is that I got it for free!! Second to that would be my yellow chair that is actually part of a set, Lindsey has the other one. It is so bright and cheery; it’s definitely a statement piece and is the first thing you notice when you walk through the door.”

Coley

Coley has transformed old card catalogues and barn wood into this beautifully repurposed desk.

Karie

Look at that cute piano!

Beth

“The dresser was my husband’s and originally was a horrible shade of green. We refinished it white and I added new drawer pulls I made our of some wooden dragonflies and knobs I got from Michael’s.”

“The crib was bought in 1978 for my sister and has been used for 8 kiddos in my family. It had been in storage for 10 years when we got it out for the Little Bee, so we gave it a coat of Howard restor-a-finish, and brought it up to safety standards by ordering some new metal parts, removing the finials, and filing down the corner posts. It has been so fun to see my babies sleep in the same crib that I slept in!”

Wow! Talk about a true vintage piece! How do you decorate with vintage furniture? We would LOVE to see! Show us on instagram or in the comments below! Happy Sunday!
