Antique Cabinet – Advice Needed!

I’m so excited about my new beauty, I just had to share!

I love the old drawer pulls

but the skeleton key is my favorite part!

Stay tuned for its makeover!

Should I paint it in an antique off-white like my armoire

or in a vintage blue?

Or another color? I appreciate your input!!

a painted table

***Hey all it’s Mandy again, just stoppin over for a quick little Thursday project***

You guys getting sick of me yet? This week I have a nice little table redo for you. When I moved into my apartment I knew that I wanted a white round table (to go with my turquoise chairs). After checking out prices on tables I decided that I was going to find one on Craigslist and paint it myself to save a few buckaroos. It just so happens that I was able to find exactly what I wanted for a whopping $25. It was fantastic, a round pedestal table, with fun detailing and even an extra leaf to make it larger.

The whole undertaking ended up being about $40 by the time I purchased the table and all my supplies. Which was quite a steal, most of the tables I was on Craigslist were between $60 and $70 and well let’s just not even talk about what a new one costs.
First I had to sand it down a bit. And yes I do always sand things in the middle of the night while looking as sneaky as possible. It is the only way to go.
Then came the paint. I used a paint with primer in it to cut down on the steps. I like to make things as simple as possible. And I also used a hi gloss to make it nice and shinny. I think I ended up doing about four coats in total, only about two of which ended up on me haha. It took almost a full pint of paint that I paid $13 for. I used a roller on the top and pedestal, but a brush on the side to get it in all the little crevasses.
I am SO happy with the way it turned out. It looks so great with my chairs, right?!
With that in place I am nearly done furnishing my apartment, now all that is missing is the couch to go behind my great ottoman. Any good suggestions on where I can get a great, but still affordable couch in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area?

Getting Things Done

I want to start today by apologizing in advance for a very random post.  But I wanted to share with you what we have been up to.  We have been working on several projects and in the process of moving things around. So first off I want to show you a sneak peak of what my current project. It is taking me a lot longer to sand the thing than I thought, but it will be worth it in the end.
This past weekend we finally got our new table in the kitchen!  Now it is definitely still a work in process, not the table itself, but the whole setup.  The table is a lot smaller than we are used to in this space.  And our benches are actually longer than the table itself and don’t push under the edge of the table.  Needless to say the benches are definitely going to have to go and we need to find some chairs.  I would love to find some smaller benches for maybe the ends of the table so they could fit underneath, but we will see.  So here is what it looks like in its new home.
And I almost forgot to tell you, my dad made us another amazing light!  Check it out!  This one is slightly smaller and has a rod coming down from the ceiling instead of just the cord.  It looks great in the space!  Now we just need to get us some industrial looking stools!
And so the farmhouse table found a new home in the formal dining room.  It fits perfectly in the space and looks awesome under the industrial light!  Now I just need to find some more seating for the table.
And one more thing I crossed off my list this week was getting an “H” for miss Hadley to go on the frame wall in the girls room.
See very slowly but surely we are getting things done and yes in a very random order, but at least its a few less things to cross off my list.

DIY Antique Chair Shelf

Happy Friday everyone!  I found this antique chair on the side of the road in bulk trash (yes I did) and it reminded me of the chairs my grandma had growing up.  It didn’t have legs, and originally I wanted to add legs and use it as an occasional chair.  But then I got an idea to use it as a shelf.

I think this will make a great baby shower gift!  It will be for sale at our Holiday Shoppe!

Do you love the B pillow?  Me too!  Remember our fabulous guest blogger yesterday?  She makes these beauties and you can find them here.

Have a great weekend!
Coley :)

A Fairytale Wall

We’re doing a vintage fairytale theme in our daughter’s nursery. I’m excited to show you the frame wall I just finished!

I found these frames and this book full of great vintage fairytale pictures at Goodwill.

I added some off-white paint to the frames that were “yucky” gold. Then I arranged the frames how I wanted them and flipped them upside down. I taped strips of wax paper together and placed it over the frames. With a marker I made dots where the nails would go. Then I taped the wax paper to my wall and nailed through the marker dots – so easy! I ripped off the wax paper and hung the frames.

I love how it turned out!

Finally, here are some close-ups:

Thursday’s Treasures

Today we are starting something very fun!!!  Are you ready!  We want to know what you’ve hunting and what treasures you have been finding!  Have you found an amazing steal of a deal on craigslist or at the thiftstore or at an amazing garage sale?!  Please share with us.  So we are starting a linky party.  Each week we will feature our favorite finds from the week before.

Since this is our first week I thought the Junk in the Trunk Trio would start by sharing a few of our amazing finds of the week . . .

Monique found this adorable chair in Flagstaff this weekend at an antique shop!
Coley found this amazing handmade wooden train from the ’50s.
So this isn’t the best picture quality, but I think you get the idea!  I found this amazing bench on Craigslist this past weekend.  I’m still trying to decide where exactly I want to put it.  Right now it is sitting along an empty wall, which it works there, but I think I might want to put it at our table.  What do you think?  Can I just say, i love the intricate details of the back and the arms and the legs!  So fun!

Alright here are a few guidelines before we get this party started . . .
1.) Please link a post that features your amazing treasure!
2.) Link as many posts as you want!!
3.) If you don’t have a blog and would still like to contribute, you can load your picture onto a sharing site like flikr or photobucket and add that linky here.
4.) Please grab the button and put it on your post, sidebar, or blog somewhere if you want to link up. This way we can share the party and discover even more wonderful treasures!
4.) You most definitely don’t have to be a follower to join, but we would love to have you!
5.) The party will be open until Sunday night, so you have all weekend to discover a new treasure to share!  And check back next week to see if you have a favorite find!

So now its your turn. We want to see those treasures!

I used old ceramic items from a local store by my house when I was little and would recycle them and give them to my Family as gifts. I have created many different things throughout the years, from candles to clothing ect…Lately I have been making one of a kind cake and cupcake stands using recycled vintage items. I LOVE chalkboard paint, that is my latest obsession! I’m excited to be part of this unique boutique and looking forward to meeting all of you!

Sweetest Thing Boutique~

JoAnn Gothard
Hi, my name is JoAnn Gothard, I am sharing a booth with Pam Cross. I have been married 41 yrs.to my husband Jack. We have 4 grown children and 13 grandchildren who are the love of my life. They range from 18 yr down to 1 year. 7 girls and 6 boys. I love decorating and finding treasures where ever I go. Just mostly a hobby I used to craft a lot but not much anymore! I love to find old things and make something awesome out of them .I work @ PLEA which is the Union for the Phoenix P.D. great job and I just celebrated 15 years.
Inspired Wear
Mary Rita Horn and Cathy Leavitt began Inspired Wear just over one year ago by offering to customize jeans with embroidered messages and recycled fabrics for women and girls.  You see, we are both “boy-moms” and, this gave us the perfect excuse to work in a little more girl time!  We have had customers order jeans that celebrate their family, that express their faith, that support their favorite team (usually in support of their child) and that advertise their business.  The possibilities are endless!   We love working with our clients to make their jeans as unique as possible.
Along the way, we came up with an idea for a belt that we both loved.  Each belt is made of an assemblage of upholstery fabrics, a recycled buckle and a vintage brooch.  Every one of them is different, making them a little piece of art for you to cinch around your waist!
Most recently we have been asked to create t-shirt quilts, and we have chosen to back them with the most wonderfully soft minky fabrics.  And because you just can’t have a quilt without a pillow, we have designed a t-shirt quilt pillow.  Some people call them quillows!
We look forward to seeing everyone at the Vintage Market and encourage you to bring along a pair of jeans or two so that you and your daughter can “wear your hearts on your jeans!”  You can check out more about Inspired Wear on their blog or in their shop!
You can look forward to seeing Material Girls, Sweetest Thing Boutique, JoAnn Gothard & Inspired Wear all at the Vintage Market on September 17 in Scottsdale!
And be sure to check out our Market Vendor Page for a list of all of the vendors that will be at the Market. We have just added several new vendors be sure to go check them out.

A little Distressing Never Hurt Anybody

26
So to follow up from the DIY Farmhouse Table reveal, we wanted to show you a few distressing techniques that we used. And when we say “technique”, we mean grabbing anything and everything in your garage and having fun. Initially after completing the build, there is a sense of fear, of not wanting to mess up the beautiful natural wood table. But, after seeing the finished product, it is certainly worth every mark and it truly makes a difference if that’s the look you are going for.
Below you will see a series of pictures that will show the items we used, the mark that was left and the look after stain was applied. Keep in mind the stain is still drying in these pictures and there is no poly coat applied yet.
The first item we used was some vintage metal hardware that we had in the garage. You could use any circular item such as a spray paint can or whatever you might find.
The next item used was a metal rod that was actually an old yard sale sign holder. We did an X pattern as seen below.
The next one is a U-shaped rack thinga-ma-jig. It took a little courage on this one. I mean to think that one could take a screw and rake the face of the table over and over. But once again, the results were worth taking the leap.
A little story behind the nails used below. They are actually square head nails that are from an old barn that MableDear salvaged some wood from.  The barn sits on a homestead in Oregon along the Oregon Trail. The nails were pulled out of the planks that made up the side of a barn. It’s awesome how these have stood the test of time and are now incorporated into the table.
Lastly, who knew that just a typical wood screw could provide the coolest accent to a table. This has to be one of my favorite marks on the table. The stain fills into the depressions and leaves a great look.
At the end of the day its all about taking risks and remembering that you can always sand it down and start with a blank canvas.  We chose to go with the distressed table because of the look and because we know our kids will do their best to leave their mark on our new table as well.
And don’t forget that today is the last day we are accepting vendors!!!  So if you are interested please contact us asap as we are quickly filling up!
