Drafting Table turned Kitchen Island

table4
Today I have a fun project for you. A while back I found this great oak drafting table. You may actually remember this crazy picture of me trying to get this table back to my house.  The things we do for JUNK!
table3
And here she is in all her glory. After a good cleaning it was time to get busy, and with 2 coats of paint it was time for some distressing.

I love a good distressed piece of furniture, so naturally I decided this piece would look best distressed. Now I am kind of old fashioned when it comes to distressing furniture, and I’ll be real honest, I’m cheap. I painted this whole piece from a sample size of paint (2 coats) from Lowes. Now I prefer to use a power sander, it makes this go so much faster. I lightly sanded the corners and edges and places where the piece would naturally show some wear. It doesn’t require heavy sanding, I used a 200 grit sand paper. Once your piece is good and sanded, grab a damp cloth and wipe it down good to remove any excess sand and dirt. Then grab your favorite stain, mine is Minwax’s Dark Walnut. I prefer to use a paint brush and brush on the stain. Now here’s the kind of tricky part, I only do a small section at a time. So on this table I painted up one side of the leg, then I grabbed a clean rag (or old tshirt you don’t want any more, or old burp cloths work great too) and wipe off the stain. As you will quickly learn, the stain is going to soak into the areas that were sanded down the most. If you do not get your desired color the first time you can brush on the stain a second time and wipe it off again. Now this process will darken up and give the paint a richer over all color. You can get a better idea of what I’m talking about as you see in the pictures below.

And now for the fun part, I bought this great butcher board top at Ikea to create the perfect island and then I brought my dad to town and used his expertise to put it on. And let me tell you, it was really so easy, I could have done it myself, but since my dad so kindly offered to help, why not just let him do it.  And it freed me up to take some pictures to share with you all.  So to get started I bought these corner braces or brackets, I used 6, 3 on each of the long sides of the table.  Place the bracket where you want it, make sure it is a place where you will be able to fit the drill into.  Also make sure that the bracket is level, we couldn’t find my level, so instead we used a piece of wood and placed it across the corner of the table to make sure that the top of the bracket did not exceed the top of the table.  This is very  important because it will ensure that the table top sits down onto the wood instead of leaving a gap between the table base and the butcher block top. (hopefully that makes sense, just leave a comment and let me know if you have any questions.)  Then using a very small drill bit, drill a small hole into the 2 holes of the bracket.  This will make it easier to then screw your screws into the base.picmonkey_image(25)
Now that the holes are prepped, grab your screws and screw them into the base.  Then grab the butcher block top, measure and make sure that you have it placed evenly, then repeat the same process with the brackets, by prepping the holes and then screwing the screws this time into the table top.

And there you have it!  A beautiful butcher block island!  Once the top is all attached I would recommend wiping a mineral oil to treat the butcher block before using it.

Once a drafting table but now a beautiful island!

Arnold Adventures

Ok y’all!  I am so excited to tell you about my fun adventure I had on Friday!  My mom, dad and my baby, Benson headed to a small town Benson, AZ to the Historic Arnold Hotel.  I was really excited about this because obviously my son’s name is Benson and our last name is Arnold.  I was really hoping to get a fun sign with our name in it or some linens or something along those lines.  Unfortunately there was nothing of the sort there but there was some really cool stuff!  I got there and jumped right into the auction so I didn’t get that many pictures.  Here are a few.

Benson tried to bid on everything.  I think he would have spent all my money if he could have.  Good thing he didn’t have a bid number!

I thought the green cots would make really cute little boy beds, but I needed at least two and they only had one, and I didn’t get to bid on these awesome mailboxes because they were auctioned off on Saturday.  Big Bummer!

I haven’t had time to get good shots of what I got but I will post them when I do.  I got a great barn wood top table, two pitchers from the Arnold Hotel and a couple chairs for a fun project you will see at the market!

Here are some picture of the actual hotel.  A sweet old man bought the hotel 5 years ago and had to sell the contents of the hotel so he could afford to pay the mortgage and he was at the auction trying to buy some pieces back.  I got to talk to him and wished I had enough money to buy everything back for him.  It was so sad.  The hotel was built in 1907 and was a place for people from the railroad to stay.

I begged them to sell me the Hotel Arnold sign but they wouldn’t do it.  I understand, but I was bummed!

It was a fun adventure and I feel blessed to have got to see such a cool piece of history.

Old Items Given New Life

Since all of us here at JITT are junkers, we tend to have a lot of random items that hold some potential to be repurposed into something awesome. We may not know exactly what that might be when we spot the perfect item, but we just know that we have to have it! Here are some ways that we have found new use for our chippy vintage items!

“This is a handy dandy toast holder turned mail sorter. It is a vintage toast stand that I bought at a thrift store, it was a dirty grungy brass and I painted it a nice creamy white, to give it a second life. Now it ever so attractively holds my mail on my buy viagra entry table.”

“Ok, this isn’t mine, but I thought it was such a great idea.  I have the base of my grandmothers old sewing machine exactly like this in my garage and I can’t wait to redo my bathroom.  Genius!!”

Karie has repurposed these antique, glass pitchers as vases! A cute and quirky way to display your flowers (from Valentine’s Day perhaps?)

This old frame turned into a prayer board (given to me by my sweet friend, Christine!) Now this frame that would have otherwise collected dust now has new purpose!

There you have it! What are some fun ways you like to re-use your old items lying around the house? We’d love to see! Comment below and post pictures on our instagram @junkinthetrunkvintagemarket. Have a great day!

Storage Room Wars

My husband and I decided to tackle the storage room this weekend.  It was a big junk pile and now I can actually find my paint and brushes!

Before (this is a little embarrassing!)

After…

Before…

After…

Before…

After…

I would love to slap some paint on the walls, but if we buy the house this has to be torn down anyway so hubby wouldn’t let me waste my time.  Smart man, but it would look so cute in a bright fun color right?

Did you do any organizing this week?  Post some pics on our facebook page or tag us on instagram #junkinthetrunkvintagemarket

Happy organizing!

A Nautical Christmas

I hope you guys all had a FANTASTIC Christmas!!! And of course the real question on everyone’s mind is did you get any good junk? I know the discussion was started on the facebook wall yesterday, but I just couldn’t pass up

an opportunity to share the wonderful things I got to add to my collections.

Those of you who know me….like actually in person know that I absolutely LOVE anything and everything Nautical, vintage, modern, navy blue or yellow, anchors, stripes or sailboats, I’m not picky I will take it all. It is a wee bit of an obsession right up there with Nancy Drew, bows and Pink Kitchen appliances (yes I am really well rounded in strange things to collect) this makes me either a loon or quite possibly the easiest person in the world to shop for. So naturally I was beyond excited when I opened up not one, not two, not three but FOUR wonderful vintage nautical gifts on Christmas eve.

The brass ship bookend is a near perfect match to one I already have -how fun is that? I plan to spread out the bookends of different bookcases and tables. I am even toying with the idea of painting the wooden wheel one. The ship picture will one day soon be part of a collage on my wall and the book “God is my Captain” will soon be accompanying my other vintage books not about sailing at all but with great catching sailing titles and covers.

And with that I leave you with three thoughts for the day:

1. What great stuff did you get for Christmas…..or find in the dumpster after?

2. Should I paint the bookend or leave it as it is?

3. And finally just know that if you ever have anything Nautical that you are about to throw out please feel free to send it my way hahah!

Happy Sailing to you all!!!

I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Provence for the drawer fronts and added dark and clear wax. The top is a dark stain and the frame of the dresser is a Clark and Kingston color and I can’t read the color so I don’t remember what it’s called. It is a dark grey.

This will be for sale at the Market this Saturday!!!!!!
