How She Wears It: Mint Edition

Mint is one of our favorite colors here at JITT (just take a look at our logo–well it’s in the mint family…ish), so naturally, this color finds its way into our lives in various aspects. It could be a decorative piece in our homes, a pair of jeans, a nail polish color, or anything really! Here are just some of the ways that we love to accessorize and decorate with mint!

Mandy

“I don’t have a lot of mint in my house, I am more of a turquoise girl myself, but I am totally in love with this nail polish. Looks good on my pale skin – sometimes that is hard to come by haha. It is #340 Mint Sorbet by Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear. (great nail polish – for around $3 it’s a win win really, their colors won’t disappoint).”

“This is one of my favorite scarves! It was a gift from my 10-year old cousin this past Christmas, and she really picked a great find. It’s so fun and easy to accessorize with (as you may have seen from Friday’s post). Definitely a keeper.”

A Pinteresting Tuesday: Super Simple yet Elegant Burlap Table Runner

Super Simple craft for y’all today! Since this month’s theme is about taking old things and making them into something new, I thought I would take a bunch of my old burlap I have lying around and make a new table-runner out of it! It really is super simple and I think it adds a simple touch to a table for the upcoming spring season, Easter celebrations, or outdoor gatherings.

Inspiration from: The Kitchn

Items used:

Old burlap from Home Depot (best place to buy it. You can get about 3 yards for under $5!!!)

Twine to tie the ends (Hobby Lobby)

Sewing machine to stich a simple seam along the edge

Vintage Medical Cabinet turned Princess Glam

I am a little obsessed with this redo I just finished.  I want to keep it, but I don’t have the perfect spot for it, so I will have to sell it at the market in April.

Here is the cabinet before…

I put two coats of Krylon in Catalina Mist Satin finish and added crystal knobs from Hobby Lobby and here it is after…

photo(26)

This is where I wanted to put it until my ever so smart husband reminded me that we couldn’t open the oven.  Not that that’s a

huge deal to me since I don’t cook, but he vetoed the idea.

Old Items Given New Life

Since all of us here at JITT are junkers, we tend to have a lot of random items that hold some potential to be repurposed into something awesome. We may not know exactly what that might be when we spot the perfect item, but we just know that we have to have it! Here are some ways that we have found new use for our chippy vintage items!

Mandy

“This is a handy dandy toast holder turned mail sorter. It is a vintage toast stand that I bought at a thrift store, it was a dirty grungy brass and I painted it a nice creamy white, to give it a second life. Now it ever so attractively holds my mail on my buy viagra entry table.”

“Ok, this isn’t mine, but I thought it was such a great idea.  I have the base of my grandmothers old sewing machine exactly like this in my garage and I can’t wait to redo my bathroom.  Genius!!”

Karie has repurposed these antique, glass pitchers as vases! A cute and quirky way to display your flowers (from Valentine’s Day perhaps?)

This old frame turned into a prayer board (given to me by my sweet friend, Christine!) Now this frame that would have otherwise collected dust now has new purpose!

There you have it! What are some fun ways you like to re-use your old items lying around the house? We’d love to see! Comment below and post pictures on our instagram @junkinthetrunkvintagemarket. Have a great day!

New Life for the Cloche

A couple weeks ago I found this cloche with a wood base at the thrift store for $2. Score! I already had one cloche, but without the wood base, so I was very excited to find one with the base. Cloches are so great and very versatile for decorating. But I thought it might be kind of fun to update it a bit.  So I decided to take that wood base and paint it a bright fun turquoise.  I used the same technique that I used on the wood salt and pepper shakers a while back.  I used just 2 light coats of paint, but making sure its evenly covered.  picmonkey_image (28)

Once the paint is nice and dry (I let mine dry over night) then with some fine sandpaper you can add a light distressing.

And that’s it.  A fun little update to the old wood base.  A nice way to brighten up a room!

Old Made New

I got the privilege to paint a beautiful old vanity for a dear friend.  She was gifted this vanity from a friend for her birthday (I need to find friends like that!).

Here is the vanity before…

IMG953116

I kind of fell in love with it and told her she shouldn’t paint it, but she wanted it to be fresh and clean.  I think she was right, it turned out great!

I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and normally you don’t have to sand.  Well, this piece was sitting outside for quite a while and it was flaking off, so I had to sand the flakes off.  As I was sanding I started really regretting painting this piece.  It was perfect and chippy, but wasn’t functional for a vanity.  So I pressed on.  There is a point in every project that it gets worse before it gets better.  As I put the first coat of paint on, I was hating it.  The piece had warped from being outside and it wasn’t smooth so you could see all the cracks and bumps.  I kept going though because I knew it would look great once it was done.  After the second coat and a bit of sanding and waxing, it looked great!

Here she is…

How cute are these knobs she chose?  I think they are from Anthro.

How She Decorates With Vintage Furniture

In light of our awesome theme this month, Kickin’ It Old School, we are going to share with you our obsession (yeah…its an obsession) with vintage furniture! And, because we have some crafty junkers on our team, a lot of this is also repurposed and up-cycled furniture. Enjoy!

Mandy

mail-2

“I have a few vintage pieces of furniture and I LOVE them all, but if I had to pick my favorites these would be them. The  massive armoire, that oh so decoratively hides my TV, has moved with me four times. And let me tell you it is QUITE heavy, but so worth the trouble, it really pulls the room together. And the best part is that I got it for free!! Second to that would be my yellow chair that is actually part of a set, Lindsey has the other one. It is so bright and cheery; it’s definitely a statement piece and is the first thing you notice when you walk through the door.”

Coley

Coley has transformed old card catalogues and barn wood into this beautifully repurposed desk.

Karie

Look at that cute piano!

Beth

“The dresser was my husband’s and originally was a horrible shade of green. We refinished it white and I added new drawer pulls I made our of some wooden dragonflies and knobs I got from Michael’s.”

“The crib was bought in 1978 for my sister and has been used for 8 kiddos in my family. It had been in storage for 10 years when we got it out for the Little Bee, so we gave it a coat of Howard restor-a-finish, and brought it up to safety standards by ordering some new metal parts, removing the finials, and filing down the corner posts. It has been so fun to see my babies sleep in the same crib that I slept in!”

Wow! Talk about a true vintage piece! How do you decorate with vintage furniture? We would LOVE to see! Show us on instagram or in the comments below! Happy Sunday!

Tips for Decorating with ~VINTAGE~

Hi, Junk in the Trunkers! I’m Liz from The Blue Eyed Owl. The girls asked me to pop over and talk a little bit about incorporating vintage into your home decor. I thought I would take you on a little “insta-tour” of some of my favorite vintage items in my own home and give you a few tips along the way.

1. Mix vintage with new, thrifted, and handmade items.

You don’t need to have all vintage items to have a vintage look in your home. This little corner has a vintage chair & tray, handmade coasters, a planter from Ikea, a table from West Elm, and a thrifted Crate & Barrel wine glass…cute kid too!

2. Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose.

I love this old industrial file cabinet, but have no use for a file cabinet since it’s 2013 and everything is paperless. I discovered it is the perfect size to store vinyl albums and my turntable so it is now a record cart!

3. Plants & Light
This is just a general home decor tip but probably the most important. Add a little life with green things and shine some light on your pretty vintage treasures.

4. Use vintage items for storage.

Modern storage furniture is not the prettiest. Vintage furniture is much more fun and serves the same purpose. In this picture you can see all my favorite storage secrets. A vintage cart displays my quilts and blankets, my painted industrial cabinets store a bunch of my vintage collections, ugly dvds, holiday items and more, and the stacked vintage suitcases double as holiday decor storage and a side table.

5. Use new stuff with a vintage style.

Our orange sofa is from Thrive. They make new furniture with a mid-century modern feel. Vintage is almost always better, but if you can’t find exactly what you like, you can find it new in a vintage style. This sofa also has the added perks of free delivery and a warranty.

6. Break the rules.

This room has a mid-century sofa, French Provencial sofa, antiques, retro, and modern items. I’m breaking all the rules and I don’t care. Use what you love!

7. Use your collections.

If you’re like me, you have a lot of little collections. Don’t let them sit in a drawer, use them! I use these flower frogs everywhere to hold pencils, display art, cards, and vintage flashcards.

8. Make it cozy.

I was afraid of vintage pillows and blankets for awhile but if you clean them properly they aren’t scary. They add the perfect cozy touch so that you can live in your home and still have style.

9. Use your favorite colors.

You can find vintage items in every color of the rainbow. This little vignette is my color inspiration for my home. Aqua, orange, yellows, pinks are my favorites. You can easily do darker colors, even black and white and still incorporate vintage into your home.

I hope you enjoyed my tips! Come visit me over on my blog and if you’re in Phoenix come see me at the Market in April!
xoxo,
Liz

Storage Room Wars

My husband and I decided to tackle the storage room this weekend.  It was a big junk pile and now I can actually find my paint and brushes!

Before (this is a little embarrassing!)

After…

Before…

After…

Before…

After…

I would love to slap some paint on the walls, but if we buy the house this has to be torn down anyway so hubby wouldn’t let me waste my time.  Smart man, but it would look so cute in a bright fun color right?

Did you do any organizing this week?  Post some pics on our facebook page or tag us on instagram #junkinthetrunkvintagemarket

Happy organizing!

bathroom organization

I could easily spend hours drooling over pretty, clean and orderly bathroom photos on pinterest. But when it really gets down to it I am either too cheap and or too lazy to make one happen in real life. Because well, we use everything so much it is just nearly impossible to keep it all looking AWESOME at all times. I have done my best to meet half way with the attractive and also the functional. But consider yourself warned these photos won’t dazzle you.

On the counter I keep my body spray, current lotion, current nail polish, cotton balls and Q-Tips. What I deem to be some of the more attractive bathroom items I use daily. Both the cotton balls and Q-Tips are in small apothecary jars that I have picked up from thrift stores over time. If I ever found the right one I would like to put them all on a small colorful tray, just to give it a more finished look, and a little more color.

Then we get to the drawer. Now my bathroom just has ONE drawer, and a larger open cupboard. It was really difficult for me to figure out the best way to use it. I was used to having multiple small drawers or shelves. I didn’t like that with one drawer everything fell together and rolled all around. I am the type of person that likes everything to have a home, and that was just not working for me. So I ended up getting an organizer from Ikea that fit perfectly inside. I got it over a year ago, and it looks like they no longer have the same one, but these are similar.

As you can see there is a little compartment for everything that I use daily. Makeup, toothbrush/toothpaste, moisturizer, hair clips and so on. I started out with all my makeup in a cute bag that was in a basket with my hair products, and curling irons that I kept under the skink. Which totally worked, but when it came to the day to day I never put the basket back away, it always sat out on the counter, making it look messy and cluttered. So I sorted thorough all of my stuff and tried to separate out all the things that I use EVERYDAY, and I found a place for all of those items in the drawer with easy access, then the non essential maybe once a week items got put in the cupboard.

My suggestion for bathrooms is easier is always better. The easier it is to put things away the more likely you will actually do it.
