Kid’s Photo Gallery with DIY Memo Board

Today’s project has been on my to-do list for quite some time! I have had all of the supplies to do something with my girl’s big blank wall for quite some time now, but finding the time to put it all together was another question!  They wanted some place to put their own pictures up and I wanted a clock and a weekly schedule for them to see daily! I think the wall gallery turned out pretty cute for a little girls room. Knowing me though, it might be a work in progress. If so, stay tuned for a part two!

Kid's Wall Photo Gallery with DIY Memo Board {Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market}

The memo board was super simple to make!

Items used:

Ikea frame

About a half yard of fabric (mine was from Hobby Lobby, I just love the new Greek key pattern out right now, so fun!)

duct tape to secure the fabric around the backing of the frame! SO simple and now you have your own dry erase memo board for virtually anything!

I heart scarves. I reeeeeeealy heart cashmere ruffle scarves.

222Yes, I am well aware that I am like two years behind in my love of scarves. In fact, two years ago, when EVERYONE else was wearing scarves, I thought they were kind of dumb. Fast forward to yesterday, and my boss asked me if I own like a million scarves because I am always wearing one. And then he proceeded to prance around in my leopard print scarf for a half an hour. It’s okay. He has pre-teen daughters. I hear that makes you a little wacky…

Anyway, on to the fun stuff – new scarves! I started making these cashmere ruffle scarves for the November market, and they were definitely my biggest sellers. Maybe it was because the day of the market was a record low temp, but I choose to believe it was because they are friggin’ awesome. And now I will reveal my most cautiously guarded secret to you…

I don’t know how to ride a bike.

Okay, maybe my second most cautiously guarded secret – how to make a cashmere ruffle scarf for yourself!
You will need
070
A sweater (you might recognize this as the one who contributed its sleeves to hold up my boots)
a rotary cutter if you have one, but scissors are fine
sewing maching
matching thread
First, cut the body of your sweater into strips. These are 4.5 inches, but you can obviously adjust it to the width you want.
075

Next, find the seam on one side of the strip and cut it off completely. Only cut the seam off on ONE side though. You should end up with three long strips instead of three loops.
053

Pin the strips “right” side together at the point where you cut off the seam. Notice that on sweaters, there is

a subtle difference between the “right” side and the “wrong side. On the “right” side, the stitches look like clean straight lines. On the “wrong” side, they are kinda zigzaggy. Yes, I made that word up. I’m cool like that. Stitch the strips together. Don’t forget to backstitch at the beginning and the end.

055
060
063

When the strips are all stitched together, turn them so that the raw edges are facing you. Separate them as if you were going to press them open like you normally would for any sewing project. (Um, I totally never press my seams open. Don’t tell my Aunt Pat.) Stitch the raw edge down with as small a seam allowance as you can. In other words, stitch it down, really close to your original seam.
074
When you come to the end, turn the scarf and go back down the other raw edge, again as close as you can. You are just tacking down the raw edges so they look a little less sloppy.
077

When you get back to where you started, backstitch across your original seam. You should have sewn a really long rectangle. Trim off the excess.
079
Yay! Now you have a really long strip of cashmere! How exciting!
Here is where my method differs a little from the expected. If you have been sewing for a while, you know that to make a ruffle or gather, you sew a long running stitch and then pull the thread to create the ruffle. Well, I did that, and the result was Beth yelling at strips of cashmere and thread. (Don’t judge. My chemistry prof told me that it helps to talk to your experiments.) The thread broke, or got bunched up in weird places, etc. So I tried gathering/ruffling another way – by hand. Yes. It is more tedious, but I think you get a more fun random and unique look because the gathers are not uniform. And there’s less yelling at inanimate objects. To hand gather, you simply pinch the fabric into little bunches and run it through the machine. This takes a little practice, but it’s worth it.
145
Just so ya know, I’m holding my camera with my chin for this picture. It was awesomely awkward
Anyway, continue to gather little bunches and run them through your machine until you reach the end.
146
148
When you are totally done ruffling, simply sew another line of stitches over the original ones. This isn’t strictly necessary, but I think it makes the ruffles more secure and also gives you the opportunity to fix any gaps or weird stuff that happened during the hand ruffling.
149
Don’t stitch it with a twist in it!!! Why the heck did I take the picture like that? Sorry peeps.
Now put on your scarf! It’s supposed to be “cold” here again this week again – 60′s brrrrrrr – so you have an excuse to wear your new cozy, warmy, ruffly scarf!
221
Just don’t let my boss get it. He’s a little off, you know.

Vintage Medical Cabinet turned Princess Glam

I am a little obsessed with this redo I just finished.  I want to keep it, but I don’t have the perfect spot for it, so I will have to sell it at the market in April.

Here is the cabinet before…

I put two coats of Krylon in Catalina Mist Satin finish and added crystal knobs from Hobby Lobby and here it is after…

photo(26)

This is where I wanted to put it until my ever so smart husband reminded me that we couldn’t open the oven.  Not that that’s a

huge deal to me since I don’t cook, but he vetoed the idea.

New Life for the Cloche

A couple weeks ago I found this cloche with a wood base at the thrift store for $2. Score! I already had one cloche, but without the wood base, so I was very excited to find one with the base. Cloches are so great and very versatile for decorating. But I thought it might be kind of fun to update it a bit.  So I decided to take that wood base and paint it a bright fun turquoise.  I used the same technique that I used on the wood salt and pepper shakers a while back.  I used just 2 light coats of paint, but making sure its evenly covered.  picmonkey_image (28)

Once the paint is nice and dry (I let mine dry over night) then with some fine sandpaper you can add a light distressing.

blog stuff9

And that’s it.  A fun little update to the old wood base.  A nice way to brighten up a room!

Old Made New

I got the privilege to paint a beautiful old vanity for a dear friend.  She was gifted this vanity from a friend for her birthday (I need to find friends like that!).

Here is the vanity before…

IMG953116

I kind of fell in love with it and told her she shouldn’t paint it, but she wanted it to be fresh and clean.  I think she was right, it turned out great!

IMG_6191

I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and normally you don’t have to sand.  Well, this piece was sitting outside for quite a while and it was flaking off, so I had to sand the flakes off.  As I was sanding I started really regretting painting this piece.  It was perfect and chippy, but wasn’t functional for a vanity.  So I pressed on.  There is a point in every project that it gets worse before it gets better.  As I put the first coat of paint on, I was hating it.  The piece had warped from being outside and it wasn’t smooth so you could see all the cracks and bumps.  I kept going though because I knew it would look great once it was done.  After the second coat and a bit of sanding and waxing, it looked great!

Here she is…

How cute are these knobs she chose?  I think they are from Anthro.

a new drawer

I kept seeing this photo of a painted file cabinet on pinterest. I LOVED it. But of course I don’t really have room in my studio for a full sized file cabinet, nor did I really have a use for it. So when I saw a little mini one drawer file cabinet at the thrift store for $4 I knew I had to have it. It was the perfect compromise, small enough that I could actually use it, and still get the same look. It was a typical black metal. So I started with a coat of primer and then used 3 coats of ballet slipper pink in gloss. Because well why would I not paint it pink?

At first I tried to take the hardware off the drawer, thinking that would make it nice and simple to paint the drawer. But of course it never goes that easy. It would not come off. So I resorted to painters tape. Which took a while to get it all covered, but in the end it worked just as well.

After it was all finished I added a few things to make it a nice little desk organizer. I used two old plant pots that I had sitting around to hold makers, pens, and pencils. Then I used three small prep dished to hold my business cards, washi tape and blank tags.

When all said and done I really like the way it looks. A pretty pink drawer that holds all of the odds and ends I use to package my Etsy products. Perfect!

Dream Storage: Diapers

We have a special guest today!  Michelle from Making our Dream is here giving us some awesome diaper storage ideas! Help me give her a big Junkin’ welcome!

When strangers ask how old my two kids are, I often hear, “Girl, you crazy!” My son is 19 months old and his little sister is three months old. Yep, 16 months apart and we actually planned it that way.

It wasn’t until the newborn haze wore off and my son announced he was “Poopy!” that I did the math and realized… I will be changing diapers on two kids for at least another year. Good times.

So, diapers are a big part of my life right now. They need to be accessible and organized. Bonus points for making them a conversation piece in room decor… which is what I’ve managed to do and am excited to share with you today.

First, in my daughter’s nursery, we have a fantastic diaper storage solution that is unfortunately, no longer available.

That is the Allamala Magazine Rack from Ikea. It holds about 200 diapers – all within arm’s reach of the changing table.

Typical Ikea – they always discontinue the good stuff. So, if you’re lucky, you can find one on eBay or Craig’s List. It comes in wrought iron. I spray painted mine silver to match the nursery décor.

In our downstairs playroom, we store diapers on a Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market find…

In our downstairs playroom, we store diapers on a Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market find…

In a former life, that was a dish display rack. After a quick paint job, it is fantastic for diaper storage. The shelf width is perfect for diapers, lotion, wipes and even toy display

So, that’s how I am creatively storing diapers in my home, but here are some other ideas I put together for you… First, a shower caddy!

I found this caddy at Marshall’s. As you can see, it started off wrought iron. I matched the color of the bedding a friend had registered for – gave this puppy a coat of primer, two coats of spray paint – and voila! – a unique and fun baby shower gift.

Next up… a magazine rack.

Imagine this with a coat of bright blue or yellow?  This is a nice piece too because as baby grows, it can be repurposed for coloring books (which is exactly what it holds now in my kid’s playroom!). I also found this piece at Marshall’s.

Next, some simple items you may already have or can find anywhere for CHEAP: a basket and a floating shelf.

Again, image these painted in a nursery accent color – perfect!  These also can be repurposed when the bambino is potty trained.

So, there you have it – a few alternative and creative ideas for diaper storage.  What do you think? Anything here you would use – or do you have another item you repurposed for diaper storage?  Do share!
