An Easter Dinner Table

071
Let me just say, you really lucked out today…you get three posts in one! I was going to title this Three Posts in One – Easy Cloth Napkins, Easter Eggs, Vintage China and my Children’s Shenanigans with the Garden Hose, but, um that was too long. So without further ado, here are three posts (+my childrens’ shenanigans with the garden hose) in one.
First of all – easy cloth napkins. These are…well…easy! I used a thrifted vintage pillowcase, which made four napkins. They turned out just a tad smaller than a regular napkins, so for Easter dinner, I will be giving these to the delicate ladies in my family, such as the lovely Auntie, and Cousin Anna Margaret. Uncle Bob and (ahem) my dad will be getting a roll of paper towels. Just kidding. That’s only when we are eating ribs. And ham. And burgers. And macaroni and cheese. But I digress.
It has been so beautiful here, so I decided to set my little workstation up outside. This was convenient, because it was close to the large patch of dirt in my back yard which can be easily turned into mud. Nothing entertains my beautiful little girls quite as well or as long as a good patch ‘o mud. More on that later. I used my rotary cutter to cut the hem off the pillowcase, then folded it in half, finger pressed it in the middle (this is the technical term for “push really hard with your finger to make a mark where you want to cut”) and then cut it in half.
011
013

Then I trimmed all the edges to make 4 rectangles. Really easy! Hem up the edges and you’re done. I used a 1/4 inch narrow hem. To get a narrow hem, use your seam gauge to measure a 1/2 inch hem, press/iron, then go back and fold the raw edge to the fold, and press again. Stitch as close to the folded or inner edge as you can. If you want that nice mitered corner, fold the point down into a triangle before making the final press.

052
These are so darn easy! Last time I made cloth napkins it was NOT a good experience, but these were so simple. Who is getting cloth napkins for Christmas? EV.RY.ONE.
Now on to Easter eggs! If you have read any of my kid posts, you know that I like to keep art projects fairly open ended – translate that Mommy doesn’t like to do all the work while the kiddos watch – and I felt like the Bees are still too little for “traditional” egg dying. I figured out a system that worked beautifully for us this year. We blew the eggs out of the shell, then put a chopstick through the holes and stuck the chopstick into a shoebox to paint. I could not believe how much time the Baby Bee spent painting these! She was concentrating so hard, her lil’ tongue was sticking out!

I was pleasantly surprised at how cute these turned out!
And last but not least, the vintage goodies! I host Easter at my house most years, and it’s so beautiful out this time of year that I usually set everything up outside. This year, I even talked my mom into loaning me her Grandmother’s china to serve dinner on!
Um, did anyone see that episode of friends where Chandler smashed all of Monica’s wedding china after he spent the whole day convincing her that it was okay to take it out of the box? Yeah, that was playing in my head all day long.
Anyway, I set it all up yesterday to see how it looked, and I took a few shots to show off how pretty it all looked together. I used the Resurrection Garden as a centerpiece, and the eggs the girls painted on the place settings, and I love how it all turned out! Of course, on Easter afternoon, it will be jammed with food, but I can still enjoy how pretty it all looks now.

My mom let me use her silver flatware too. When I opened the box, I got a sweet sentimental surprise – the little Christmas tag my Grandpa wrote to his parents was still in it. I feel so lucky to have this in my family!

All right, since I know you want it, here are the previously mentioned shenanigans. Since my kiddos got pretty dirty playing in the mud while I worked on the napkins, I let them turn the hose on – on each other apparently. Here is what happens when you spray a hose through a flyswatter at your little sister…

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter, spending time celebrating the ultimate sacrifice the Christ made for us!

a knotted headband

If you follow me on Instagram you got a sneak peak of this project. Over the weekend I worked on a few headband tutorials for you all. I was able to create these beauties with some shirts out of my goodwill pile. Today for you I have the how to for the knotted girl there in the middle. Pleasantly nautical right? I was also thinking it would look great made out of a thick rope or cording. Maybe someday I will try.

photo-6

First you are going to start by cutting six half inch strips from your t shirt. After cutting them, give them a good tug, stretch them out – making it into T shirt yarn. Then you will divide them into two groups of three strands.

One

Next you are going to place the first group in this ribbon formation. These two ends will now be known as A and B.
two
Now you are going to take your second group of yarn and place it on top of the first grouping, in a smily face formation. These ends will now be known as 1 and 2.
three
Now take end 2 and place it under end B
four
Next take end 1 and place it under the loop, so that you see it down the middle.
Five
Take end 2 and place it over the first part of the loop, under end 1 and then back out over the back part of the loop.
 Six
And, you are almost done, gently pull all four ends, you will begin to see the knot form. Pull it as tightly as you want, the tighter you go the smaller the knot becomes. You can finish it off with a small knot on the back that holds all the strands together, and hides nicely under your hair.
EightPretty great right? Come back next week for the next headband tutorial. And if you make one up, let us see it #jittheadbands on instagram!!

Paper Flowers!

paperflowers
Well over here at Junk in the Trunk we have been very busy preparing for the Vintage Market! It’s coming up really soon! April 27th, have you market your calendars! One of the things I have been working on is making lots of paper flowers! Now there are lots of different types and ways of making paper flowers, but today I’m just going to show you one.
picmonkey_image(18)
A book, string (I am hanging my flowers on a string, you will have to come to the market to see what we are doing with them, but you don’t have to hang them on a string), hot glue, paint (optional if you want to add a little color to the flowers) and that’s it. 1. Carefully tear the pages out of the book. 2. Fold one page in half (in elementary school our teachers used to call it hot dog style, long and narrow, as opposed to hamburger style). 3. Cut strips starting at the open end cutting 3/4 of the way toward the fol. Make sure to not cut through the fold.
picmonkey_image(19)
4. Starting on one end of the fold put a small dot of hot glue. (If you are putting your flowers on a string, lay the string through the hot glue.)  5. Start rolling the paper along the fold. 6. As you are approaching the end of the paper put a line of hot glue along the fold. 7. Continue rolling your paper to the end.
picmonkey_image(20)
8. Now for a little fluffing. Grab a pencil and starting at the ends of the paper strips roll the strips around the pencil, until you can’t roll anymore. Hold the rolled paper strips around the pencil for 10 seconds, this help them to hold a little curl. Once you remove the pencil, with your fingers gently seperate the layers of paper stips. Fluffing!

What have you guys been working on? Anything fun!?!

DIY Chicken Wire Ikea Frame {Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market}

No you are not seeing double, and yes this is the same frame from Ikea that I used for my girls gallery wall! What happened you might ask? Well, silly old me really didn’t hand that fun Ikea frame to well on the wall.  The moment came when a door was slammed a bit to hard and down came the frame, glass shattering and all. Throw it away, no! Have glass recut, expensive. Cheap option: get some chicken wire from my good old dad! I told you I was not too happy with the way the gallery wall turned out, so it was a great excuse to redo a few things!

A Resurrection Garden

Can you believe that Easter is almost here? I feel like this time of year always creeps slowly up on me, and suddenly it’s here! We here at the Beehive are loving the warm weather and are spending as much time as we can outside these days. And I love being able to serve Easter dinner outside…much easier to clean up! Since Easter is definitely close, I have started a few Easter projects with the Busy Bees, and I’m excited to share one with you.
Remembering the reason we celebrate Easter is a priority in our family and as the Little Bee grows, I think it’s important to take every opportunity to emphasize that Easter is about so much more than candy and bunnies, even though those things are fun! I saw a beautiful “Resurrection Garden” a few years ago on a blog and thought this would be a fun project for my girls and a good way to keep the empty tomb at the front of our minds.
002
To make a Resurrection Garden, you need:
- a shallow saucer. I used some terra cotta ones that were hanging around in the shed but you could use a baking dish too
- potting soil
- an empty container for the tomb. The original I saw used a small terra cotta pot, but I went super classy on this one and used an empty eye makeup remover containter.
- A rock for the front of the tomb
- Wheatberries or grass seed. I used wheatberries that I bought at Sprouts with great intentions of grinding my own wheat. Um, that never happened.
- Some sticks and twine to make the crosses.
The oranges are optional. And my weird kid likes them cut in circles instead of wedges. Go figure.

A quick note – the wheatberries will sprout faster if you soak them overnight.
First, spread a layer of soil in the saucer.
007
016017
Next, wedge the container that you are using for the tomb into the soil and cover it, too. We made one Resurrection garden and the other two I’m going to use for another decoration.
018
029
Make the crosses by tying twine around the sticks and stick them in.

033
Spread the wheatberries in a single layer and cover them with a light layer of soil. Drink some coffee. Has anyone else noticed that there are always food items in my pictures?
035040
046
Keep them moist and in a warm place, but not direct sunlight. And preferrably away from a curious dog. The best way to keep them moist is to mist them with a spray bottle, because the top layer is so shallow. Just let me warn you though, if you give spray bottles to both children, this is likely to happen…
003
instead of this…

019

I also submerged the bottom of the saucer in water in a glass baking dish for 20 minutes a day to keep the rest of the soil moist. In just a few days, we saw some growth! See the teeny tiny speck of green?
016
As of this morning, our Resurrection Garden looks like this! Check back in two weeks to see my Easter dinner table and how I use this little project as a centerpiece!
008

Fun with Terrariums

This week my kids and I are spending some time at my parents house in Spokane.  Needless to say we are having way too much fun. Yesterday we made a trip to the Goodwill, its a place we always have to go, they always have some great treasures. While there I found this great jar with a wood lid. I decided it needed a fun, bright color for spring. So with a little paint and distressing, it has a fresh new look. I used the same techniques that I used a few weeks ago on the cloche.
picmonkey_image(15)
I have one more fun little project I wanted to share with you. Today I went to MOPS (Moms of Preschoolers) with my mom. She is a teacher in one of the kids classes, and I attend a MOPS group at Scottsdale Bible so I thought it might be fun to visit a different group. Well today they were making this awesome terrarium! It was really simple, you need a jar, tiny amount of sand, soil, plant, and decorative stuff. The decorative stuff is optional but can add some fun touches of color. We used some moss, sticks or rocks. All you have to do is put a small amount of sand in the bottom the jar, then add the soil and a few small plants. I then added a rock and some moss, totally optional though. Super simple, but so cute. And what a great verse that we tied around the jars as a reminder of God’s creation every time we look at it, and its a favorite verse of Junk in the Trunk!!! So perfect!
picmonkey_image(16)
I was thinking when I got home that the jar I painted up top would also make a super cute terrarium, don’t you think!
Here are a couple other super cute ideas to bring some green into the house, using some creative and out of the ordinary planters. I particularly love the tea cups and the tool box! I think I will be planting more of these when I get home!

DIY Kids Bubble Wall Art

More colors of spring heading your way! We had a large empty wall in our living room which I had no idea what to do with. Buying large pieces of art were’nt really in the budget for the moment, so for the moment I thought I would have our girls create some masterpieces! It turned out really cute and they are really proud that it is hung for all to see in our big room!

DIY Kids Bubble Wall Art Materials:

Watercolor paper (Michaels)

Food Coloring (yes I am crazy, but yes it did come out of the clothes!)

Bubble solution (any old kid bubble solution works just fine)

Good old fashioned bubble wands!

a drop cloth of some sort to prevent a mess (alough good art never seems to stay on the canvas)

Ikea frames

Hairpin Table How To

I’m not gonna lie, I am really glad this weekend is over!  We got the stomach flu and it knocked us out.  I am still exhausted this morning which is why this post is late.  However, we did have time to make a table when just the baby had it and he was sleeping all day.  Here is the table top I snagged from a reader and i am so in love with it!

table top before edited

I got these hairpin legs from a friend.

table legs before edited

First you want to decide where the legs are going to go.  With hairpin legs you need to set the legs back by at least 1.5-2 inches because the legs angle out.  You don’t want the leg to stick out farther than the table top.  I chose to do 2.5 inches in on each side.  So I placed them where I wanted…

table leg placement edited

Then I measured and market where the legs would be screwed in…

table let placement close up edited

And here she is!

I still need to paint the room, paint the trim, get a rug and I am looking for some colorful chairs to mix in; but it’s coming along!

scrap paper Easter banner

I finally took the time to take down my Valentines Day decor this week. And once it was down I just felt like my apartment was way too plain. It needed something new, and with Easter right around the corner I decided to wip up something fun. Thus we have the birth of this delightful banner.
blog 1Now the best part about this project is that I had everything at home already, and most likely you do to. You will need yarn or string of some sort, paper bags, paint chips or paper scraps and a glue gun. I had intended to use colored and scrap book paper on my eggs, but when I went to pull it out I found a whole bag of paint chips that I had left over from a different project. So I decided to to use those instead and the colors I had worked perfectly.
IMG_3215FIrst step is to cut the bag. You will end up folding the pieces in half, so I just cut them down the crease to make it a little bit easier. I cut six pieces, 6 inches across 14 inches high – folded in half (6×7). But you can make the larger or smaller depending on where you want to hang them.

IMG_3245Next you will want to cut out an egg on each one. I did not trust myself to freehand it, so I printed out an egg clip art and traced it onto each piece before I cut them out.

PicMonkey CollageAnd then we move onto the colors. Pull out all of your scrap paper and paint chips. Cut them into strips. I made mine in various sizes- it all just depends on how wide you want the stripes to be on your eggs. Making sure that all of the slices are wide enough to cover the widest part of your egg. Then after you cut them all up arrange them how you will want to glue them.

IMG_3231After you have them all laid out you will want to glue them down to the inside of your paper bag pieces. So that the colors will be visible once you fold down the cut out egg flap.

IMG_3259After you have all of the strips glued down you will want to string your yarn through the creases, and glue the flaps together. I used four strands of yarn, but only glued one of them in the paper fold. I followed it up with a knot on either side of the eggs to pull all the strands of yarn together, and add a bit more pazazz.

IMG_3282I opted to use a hot glue gun just to make sure everything held together, but good ol elmers would probably be just as good.

IMG_3323How do you guys decorate for Easter?
