DIY Bleached & Dyed Shorts

Alright well today’s project is one that just didn’t go the way that I thought at all. Let me just tell you, it’s not quite what we had in mind and took way longer and using much more materials than we had originally t

hought. So first things first, today we are dying jean shorts! WooHoo! It’s sounds exciting and fun and easy right! No, not so much.

You will need a pair of jean shorts, some bleach, a tub, some dye (we used rit), and a washer.

This is a project that all 3 of us started together, but was taking much longer than we had ever imagined, so I finished it by myself, but if I refer to we, it because we were all together for the first few steps.

Each of us had a pair of blue jeans, that either were shorts or that we cut to use as shorts, that we put in a large bowl together and poured bleach over the top. Now msitake #1 I think we should have done them all seperately and we probably would have had a better & quicker result.

Now sometimes I think when the 3 of get together, we assume that one of knows what we are doing and has done it before, but in reality we are all assuming that about the other and in the end, we really have no idea what we are doing. Thisproject didn’t seem that difficult, it seemed pretty straight forward, but as we soon found out, we should have done a little research first.

So anyway, on our first attempt we put the bleach in with the shorts and then added some water to make sure the shorts were all completely submerged. Well unfortunately not too much happened. Very slowly the shorts were getting lighter, but let me emphasize very slowly. In an attempt to speed things up we dumped that out started over, with a new bottle of bleach and a bowl and our shorts. This worked a little more quickly, but still very slow. Mo’s shorts were definitely bleaching out much more quickly than the other 2 pairs. So we then threw them in the washer and added even more bleach. We ended up having to leave the shorts over night to soak. When I checked them the next morning, Monique’s shorts were white and ready to go, but Coley’s and mine were another story, so I left them in for the rest of the day. That night I checked on the 2 remaining pairs of shorts, first I pulled out mine, they were finally looking the way I had imagined this project to go. Then I pulled out Coley’s shorts, and much to my dismay the minute I touched them they shredded. The fibers were completely fried. Once I got them washed and out with the other 2 this is what Coley’s shorts looked like . . .

At first I had just seen the 2 holes in the back and was thinking, oh that’s not too bad, I could stick a patch on them and make them really cute. Then I flipped them over and couldn’t believe what I saw . . . a GIANT rip and hole across the entire right leg! It was quite impressive really. So unfortunately we are going to have to try this project again on another pair of shorts for Coley.

Monique & my shorts were white and ready to be dyed. We used the RIT dye, from Hobby Lobby in the teal color.

I very carefully followed the instructions on the package using a large tub to soak the shorts in. My little helper was quite excited about this project being down on her level.

Once the dye was mixed and ready I poured it into the tub with our shorts. I did add a fair amount of extra water to make sure the shorts were fully submerged under the dye. After taking them out and rinsing each pair once I decided they weren’t dark enough, so I put them back in and let them soak for a total of 45 minutes. I know that seems like a long time, but I think because I had added extra water it took an extra long time to fully take.

After a good rinse and gentle wash the shorts turned out better than expected.

Unfortunately my house is very dark, so I was having a very hard time, getting you an acurate color of what they shorts really look like. However, if you come to the Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market on September 15th you will find us wearing our new shorts! But anyways they turned out a very nice minty green color. Monique’s turned out darker than mine, but they both turned out a nice shade of minty green.

So what do you think? Has anyone else started a project thinking it would be easy and then turned out taking you forever?! This one turned out, just took a lot longer than we thought. Well actually I take that back, Monique and my shorts turned out, while we did have one casualty with Coley’s shorts.

I hope you are all having as much fun as we are preparing for the MARKET!!!

Market Tips for Vendors and Buyers

The Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market is just around the corner! As we are all working around the clock to get ready, I have had vendors and shoppers ask some great questions, so I th

ought I would share them all here. There are some tips for vendors as well as buyers here. Sorry this is a very wordy post so hang in there with me. You might just learn a thing or two!

*A big one we get asked about all the time is, How do I price my items? I think pricing is very area specific, but here are some things to keep in mind when pricing.

1. The amount paid for an item, cost of supplies and man hours. Please don’t forget to take the last one into account. If you get a chair on the side of the road and use paint you already had lying around but put 10 hours into redoing the chair, take that into account! Make sure you are getting paid at least minimum wage!!

2. When pricing for a market, keep in mind you won’t get as much for it as you would in say a fancy store. People are there to find great stuff at a great price. In my experience, if you have a lot of items priced lower, you will make more than having a few very high priced items.

3. Ask yourself if you would pay that much for the item. It may sound silly but if you wouldn’t pay for it, who will?

4. Do you want to keep it? Let’s be honest, we all have those pieces that we really don’t want to sell but feel like we should. I always price those items a little higher, but still fair, knowing that I would be happy if it didn’t sell and I could keep it!

5. Leave room to bargain! People love to get a deal so if you have a firm price in mind, price it a few bucks higher and be willing to barter. The buyer will get a deal and you will still get what you want for the item.

*We also get asked a lot from buyers if it’s ok to barter.

I say YES! But there are some rules…

1. Keep in mind that these vendors do this for a living. We don’t ask you to work for free, so please don’t ask us to! Even if you know they got a really good deal on an item, you need to keep in mind the effort and time it took them to pick up the item, clean it up and/or redo the item, supplies, time to price and haul to the show.

2. A good question to ask is, “What’s the best you can do?”. It gives the vendor the opportunity to give you a discount but doesn’t insult them by asking them to take way less.

3. If you can’t agree on a price, say thank you and walk away. There is nothing worse than people telling you that something you poured your sweat, blood and tears into making great isn’t worth that much.

4. When in doubt, asking for 10% off is a great comprise that is not offensive and you still get a deal!

5. If you LOVE it and can afford it, just buy it. We all work really hard at pricing things just right and appreciate getting a good price for our hard work!

*What should I bring to the show to shop? Here are a few essentials…

1. Hat and sunscreen- we live in AZ and its hot

2. Water (there will also be drinks and food for sale). I have had many people tell me that they stayed at the show for hours making sure they saw everything and even a few that decorated their whole house in one day! You will be tired and thirsty!

3. A big bag or cart. The rolling carts are so nice an convenient, but a bag is great for small breakables.

4. Comfortable shoes

5. Cash -most vendors take cards but some do not. There will be an ATM there if you run out, which we hope you do!

6. A good friend- its always nice to have a second opinion when shopping!

We hope you are as excited as we are!

See you in two weeks!!

Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint

It finally came! I got my milk paint yesterday and couldn’t wait to try it out! This is not a tutorial… Miss mustard Seed has an amazing set of video tutorials that I just can’t compete with. cialis no prescription

I tackled three projects in about an hour with this stuff. Here is a little side table I started with.

The paint is easy to mix and goes on pretty smooth.

As it drys, it starts to bubble.

She suggests using a metal trowel- I had a wall paper remover laying around so I used that. I just scraped off where it was peeling and I was done distressing! It was so easy!

I also did the base of this dining table.

It peeled so nicely and it really looks like the paint has been on there for 100 years. I still need to sand and stain the top, but couldn’t wait to share it with you! Both of these will be at the market!

I love the way the back of this stool turned out.

Like I said, all three of these projects were done in less than an hour. I still love Annie Sloane paint. I think I will use this when I want it really distressed and Annie Sloane when I want just the edges distressed.

Life Happens & Craziness Ensues

Well today has definitely been one of those days that just don’t quite go how I had planned. I had a few errands to run this morning and then planned to get the kids down for naps and get a project finished to show off today. But as I said, that didn

‘t happen quite the way I was dreaming it would. So instead while I was in the garage painting trying to finish something up, my oldest woke up the other 2, so I had 3 screaming children and all without enough sleep. So instead today, I will show you my crazy projects that I have been working on. Because it is almost time for the market I have a messy house with lots and lots of projects to finish. Here’s a little glimpse of the craziness that I’ve been working on.

I guess you’ll have to come to the market to see the finished products! And of course tons and tons of more fabulous goodies!

a going away gift

A sweet friend of mine moved this week, from phoenix all they way to Kent Washington. I’ve known for a few weeks this was going to happen, but life has been slightly crazy busy, and well I just kind of forgot to plan ou

cialis online pharmacy

t anything great to give them as a going away gift. So I was left with one hour and whatever I could find around my house (and my sister’s since it was her map). But have no fear even with those limitations I came up with something sweet – that may have even got a tearful response.

Fair warning Lindsey has done a very similar project on here before. I decided to go with a modified Lindsey/Pinterest map project, thinking it would be perfect for them to remember there time here in Phoenix. So I pulled out my heart shaped cookie cutter, and traced the areas of the map that contained all of the important locations. I made sure the heart included where they lived, work, and went to church.

Then I trimmed down some blue card stock to fit into the 8 x 10 frame that I found in my storage bins. Instead of just gluing the map to the card-stock I used mounting squares, creating a bit of depth.

Here you can see how the map sticks up off the back ground. In the pictures it is a bit more difficult to see, but in person it came out looking really cool…..like the map was floating in the frame.

Then stick it in the frame, and it’s a simple as that. The perfect going away gift in just a few minutes -and at no cost. Doesn’t get much better than that.
