Ruffled Towel Tutorial

I bought a towel at the dollar store and chose three fabrics I had that had similiar colors but weren’t matchy matchy.

First cut your fabric into strips. Mine were about 4 inches top to bottom, and for the width you just double the width of the towel. You could sew the edges of your fabrics under, but I like the rough edge look so I didn’t.

Sew about about 1/2 inch from the edge – do not use your reverse at all, just sew straight across your strip. Set your machine to it’s maximum stitch length.

Tug gently on your threads. One of them will cause the fabric to bunch, making your ruffle.

Keep adjusting your ruffle until it looks even and is the same width as your towel. Then tie your threads on each side in a knot.

Pin your bottom ruffle and sew it on first. Sew right over your first “seam.”

Pin on your second ruffle so you can’t see the top of your first one, and sew it on. Do the same with your final ruffle.

This is an easy, fun project would be a great housewarming gift with a bottle of wine.

Cheap Patio Furniture Upgrade

Good Morning! We are officially moving into our wallpapered house tomorrow! I have to hang out all day here today so the tv guy, cable guy (no, not Jim Carey!) and the gas company can come hook everything up. I should be unpacking, but I thought it would be more fun to do a little project!
The owners of the house left an old patio set here. It was nice, but very sad looking. U have lots to do to this house, so no money in the budget for new furniture. So a cheap fix was spray paint.
I was going to do a fun yellow but I was standing in front of the spray paints and started to panic that I wasn’t going to pick the right yellow. Does anyone else do this or is it just me? So I stuck with a safe gray and I will add yellow pillows to brighten it up.

I went with the primer and paint Dual by Krylon so I only had to do one step. Yes, I am lazy.

Here’s the before:

Do you know how hard it is to take a picture of yourself spray painting? Well, it is!

And the after…

(sort of). I ran out of spray paint and could only get the table and one chair done. And I am stuck here for the rest of the day so I can’t go get more.

Here is a good shot of the difference a little paint makes.

I can’t wait to get it done so I can sit in the patio sipping tea and reading a book while my children play so nicely with each other in the backyard. Oh wait, that will never happen, but a girl can dream right?!

Have a great weekend!

letters

***Hey all it’s Mandy again, just stoppin over for a quick little Thursday project***

Are you ready for this weeks newest addition to my home? Well ready or not here it is:
The is such a nice display area on the top of my kitchen cabinets. I have a few things that I wanted to put up there, but the area was still missing something. So, I used this tutorial I found on pinterest to make some Zinc like letters.
I got all my supplies at JoAnn’s, including the cardboard letters. This is how they looked at the beginning of the project.
Then after a few coats of paint, that was SO quick drying. They looked like this:
A very quick, easy, inexpensive project, and who doesn’t love that?

A New Dresser

Very slowly but surely we are making progress on the Girlies room.  Hadley is still sleeping in the bassinet in our room so we still have a little time to get it finished, or that’s what I keep telling myself to not feel so bad about our progress.  We had been on the hunt for a dresser for the Girls room for quite awhile, until we came across this beauty on craigslist a few weeks ago.  Since the Girl’s cribs are white and red I decided that I wanted the warm tones of the wood to shine, so we decided to restain the dresser and got our sand on.  This was quite a chore to get in all the little crevices, but so worth the finished product.
Once we got her all sanded down, we then rubbed on a few coats of our trusty Minwax Dark Walnut stain.
And here she is in all her glory!  I still need to find some great knobs and pulls to finish her off and to bring it up to the girls room.  I’m having a tough time deciding what kind of knobs I should use?  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Antique Cabinet – Advice Needed!

I’m so excited about my new beauty, I just had to share!

I love the old drawer pulls

but the skeleton key is my favorite part!

Stay tuned for its makeover!

Should I paint it in an antique off-white like my armoire

or in a vintage blue?

Or another color? I appreciate your input!!

Chalkboard Door

I have had a lot of questions on how I put together my chalkboard door. Since I did it a while ago I don’t have “action shots” but here are some final shots.

This was a door from a high school here in Phoenix that they demoed (is that a word??). The glass had broken so I took a piece of pressboard from Home Depot and hot glued it to the frame.
Side note: I love the lettering on this, but it’s on the ugly brown side :(

There is a little ledge in the back that I could glue it to.

Then I applied a few coats of chalkboard paint.
That’s it! Easy as can be! Have you done something similar? Share it on our Facebook page!

Have a great weekend!

a painted table

***Hey all it’s Mandy again, just stoppin over for a quick little Thursday project***

You guys getting sick of me yet? This week I have a nice little table redo for you. When I moved into my apartment I knew that I wanted a white round table (to go with my turquoise chairs). After checking out prices on tables I decided that I was going to find one on Craigslist and paint it myself to save a few buckaroos. It just so happens that I was able to find exactly what I wanted for a whopping $25. It was fantastic, a round pedestal table, with fun detailing and even an extra leaf to make it larger.

The whole undertaking ended up being about $40 by the time I purchased the table and all my supplies. Which was quite a steal, most of the tables I was on Craigslist were between $60 and $70 and well let’s just not even talk about what a new one costs.
First I had to sand it down a bit. And yes I do always sand things in the middle of the night while looking as sneaky as possible. It is the only way to go.
Then came the paint. I used a paint with primer in it to cut down on the steps. I like to make things as simple as possible. And I also used a hi gloss to make it nice and shinny. I think I ended up doing about four coats in total, only about two of which ended up on me haha. It took almost a full pint of paint that I paid $13 for. I used a roller on the top and pedestal, but a brush on the side to get it in all the little crevasses.
I am SO happy with the way it turned out. It looks so great with my chairs, right?!
With that in place I am nearly done furnishing my apartment, now all that is missing is the couch to go behind my great ottoman. Any good suggestions on where I can get a great, but still affordable couch in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area?

Getting Things Done

I want to start today by apologizing in advance for a very random post.  But I wanted to share with you what we have been up to.  We have been working on several projects and in the process of moving things around. So first off I want to show you a sneak peak of what my current project. It is taking me a lot longer to sand the thing than I thought, but it will be worth it in the end.
This past weekend we finally got our new table in the kitchen!  Now it is definitely still a work in process, not the table itself, but the whole setup.  The table is a lot smaller than we are used to in this space.  And our benches are actually longer than the table itself and don’t push under the edge of the table.  Needless to say the benches are definitely going to have to go and we need to find some chairs.  I would love to find some smaller benches for maybe the ends of the table so they could fit underneath, but we will see.  So here is what it looks like in its new home.
And I almost forgot to tell you, my dad made us another amazing light!  Check it out!  This one is slightly smaller and has a rod coming down from the ceiling instead of just the cord.  It looks great in the space!  Now we just need to get us some industrial looking stools!
And so the farmhouse table found a new home in the formal dining room.  It fits perfectly in the space and looks awesome under the industrial light!  Now I just need to find some more seating for the table.
And one more thing I crossed off my list this week was getting an “H” for miss Hadley to go on the frame wall in the girls room.
See very slowly but surely we are getting things done and yes in a very random order, but at least its a few less things to cross off my list.
